Yogyakarta – Soto Ayam and Prambanan Temple & Market

Our first stop after being picked up from the hotel was for lunch
One of the traditional Indonesian foods there is called ‘Soto Ayam’ with rice (other places may have it with noodles) which is basically a really tasty chicken broth with shredded fried/grilled chicken and other toppings including shredded cabbage, coriander, and meatballs.

We had a local tour guide with us – found via TripAdvisor – and he brought us to a small restaurant which only sold the dish.. well I would call it more of a food shop as the atmosphere was really laid-back and seemed to be frequented by the local people.

Fizzy drinks
In bottles! With bottle-caps!
These were a part of my childhood.. I missed them
’Garam’ on the right means salt.

I drool now, looking at it

Prambanan Temple & Market

The majority of religious people in Indonesia are Muslim, but the country itself is not an Islamic state and practises freedom of religion. Yogyakarta is the only state in Indonesia that isn’t governed by the prime minister – instead the Sultan leads the people and Hinduism/Buddhism influences can be seen in the palace architecture (we visited the palace too but that’ll be in another post). Apparently the Sultan prefers to incorporate symbols of the different religions in the Java region as a sign of equality/harmony.

Prambanan is a 9th century Hindu temple – currently the largest in Indonesia – and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was a mighty hot and sunny day
Here are some photos!

I am so desperate to visit Indonesia. When I travelled around SE Asia a few months back we didn’t have enough time to go there and just stayed on the mainland but I really want to travel across the country for a month and do lots of Scuba diving in the Gili Island =) Your photos are beautiful, have you been to the Temples of Angkor in Cambodia, they’re amazing!
