Sometime in mid-August Rosanne and I went to the House of Viktor & Rolf exhibition held at the Barbican Gallery. It’s still going on if anyone’s interested!
A special event is held every Thursday night as part of the Fashion Late programme, to include workshops, discussions, performances, games, and fashion talks by people in the industry.
On the Thursday we went there were cupcakes and a little ‘shopping extravaganza’ section where books, postcards, perfume, fashion accessories, V&R merchandise, and even some weird stuff.. I can’t remember what exactly, just that there were some weird items (which I love!).
The Viktor & Rolf mini bar
Was very tempted to get one of these sparkly stars as a happy accessory to my clothes but at £3 per star it just didn’t seem too good.. especially since I wanted one in each colour.
Signed copies of the House of Viktor & Rolf book were going at £50 each.
Unsigned copies for about £33 each.
Of course, we later found out that you could get the book off Amazon for £22..
Unfortunately, no photos were allowed in the actual exhibition, which featured signature pieces from their collections since 1992. Each collection had its own little section with a brief and a video of the catwalk show. Mannequins were made to the image the actual model who wore each piece. And of course at the centre was the House. You could get a closer look from upstairs through small binoculars set up on the balconies.
My favourite collections were:
– Russian Doll (A/W 99-00) where one model dressed by Viktor & Rolf themselves in 9 layers of jewel-encrusted clothes as she rotated on a pedestal.
– Long Live the Immaterial (A/W 02-03). Using bluescreen technology, different videos were projected onto parts of the models’ clothes where there was an element of chromakey blue. Very cool.
– One Woman Show (A/W 03-04). A collection dedicated to Tilda Swinton (I love her), and so for the show all the models were made to look exactly like her. Tilda participated in the catwalk too! She has an amazing look about her.
We spent about 4 hours at the gallery.
Loved it!

Wow that looks like an awesome exhibition! Too bad the prices were soo steep! 50 pounds for a signed book? Jeebus!
That’s such an awesome exhibit!!! I think I would have had to have one of those stars!
Hi there!
I meant to thank you for stopping by my blog a little while ago. Just wanted to say how beautiful your Salzburg piccies are! Also the Viktor and Rolf showcase looks great – the Barbican is definitely a London plus (no matter how ugly it is on the outside!)
Cheers!
