AKA

How to Have Too Much Fun / Embarrass Yourself / Go Crazy at a Festival

wildernessfestival

This is way overdue, but BANG here’s my post about my time at Wilderness Festival 2013, held last August in beautiful Charlbury near the Cotswolds. It was a rather last-moment decision to attend (like many of my big life decisions..) and omg it was THE best decision ever! SO here are about 50 photos and some accompanying text in an attempt to best share with you my experience at what I frequently describe to my friends as ‘The Best Festival Ever’ 🙂

The THING about Wilderness is that.. it’s not just a music festival. I like to say that it’s a festival that celebrates LIFE! Because there’s so much to see and to. It’s full of stimulating activities and experiences which enrich your life.

There’s fantastic FOOD, art, beautiful people, poetry readings, dance classes, cricket, circus shows, fire twirlers, wild swimming, archery, crafts, hula hooping, a BUBBLE STAND, night-time raves in the forest, lanterns, fancy dress, face painting, books hanging from trees which you can take and read, a SPA, science lessons, horse-riding, cooking classes, speed dating… there’s just SO MUCH that I get overwhelmed and excited just trying to recollect it all! Just imagine ALL THIS set upon rolling green hills and big beautiful trees..

campsite

I borrowed a Cath Kidston tent from my dear friend Hannah – and set it up ALL TO MYSELF. If there’s one festival camping tip I can divulge it’s HAVE YOUR OWN TENT. Having the space and privacy is amazing! Also I get to lay around naked without a care then the sun gets in and tries to burn me alive during the late mornings.

malaysia flag

There were three of us in the group who were originally from Malaysia one of the girls actually brought a Malaysian flag to the festival! We were wondering if there were any other people there who were from Malaysia as well.. we concluded: probably not. They set up the flag at our campsite. How cute!

FOOD

2013 headlined by Polpo, Hix, and Ottolenghi – i.e. they catered the nightly banquets.

There was also food by Moro, St John, and J. Sheekey.

foodstalls

I had most fun eating throughout the day from the many stalls that served the festival all day! I have to say, it was rather refreshing not to see the usual crappy kebabs and other junk food that you’d usually find at other music festivals :p

foodsign pulledpork

^pulled pork meal

cheeseburger

^freakin’ awesome cheeseburger.. drooling right now. RIGHT NOW.

saltbeef

^salt beef on fries topped with cheese

edible flowers

^edible flowers

Yeah, EDIBLE FLOWERS. From one of those health food thingies. Of course I had to at least try it, so up to the counter I went and collected my free cup of.. flowers and other plants. There was some kind of dressing drizzled on top but you know what? IT SUCKS. That’s the truth. So dry and.. tasteless..hmm.

Eating that enriched my life in terms of introducing to me what it’s like to be a wild grazing herbivore (one tick off the life-experience list!), but nothing more..

teatime bus

^a little teatime section complete with big red London bus!

moro

^Having breakfast at the Moro tent

There were lots of haystacks to lounge on.. isn’t that so hipster cool? Hahaha

SUNSHINE / PLAYTIME

We were SO lucky. The sun LOVED us and showed itself all through the festival! Needless to say everyone was in a great mood. It was truly a festival full of love (fuelled and encouraged by sunshine).

field of people

During the day, people would just laze around on the grass. You’d never get bored because there’d be so many quirky people to watch. Art to see. Books to read. Music to listen to. Games to play. You just can’t be bored.

grass time

We were happy just to BE on the grass!

us three

^Linda, Me, Aishah

i love sun

We’d spend ages on this particular hill near the lake, soaking it up. Every day.

lakeside

It was one of the quieter areas. I thought of rolling down the hill, but fortunately I had enough brains to restrain myself for fear of rolling all the way into the cold water.

SO, I went to a water-free zone to do my rolling and land-hugging instead:

crazy1 crazy2

^dry swimming here.

crazy3 crazy4

My friends were so embarrassed that they stayed away and used the camera to document my actions instead.

I did all sorts of rolls – forwards, backwards, sideways.
I was SO HIGH ON SUNSHINE. HIGH ON LIFE. I couldn’t stop!

I started talking to random people passing by, trying to persuade them to join me on the ground.
I crawled around like an animal. I felt like an animal. I slithered around like a worm.

It was one of the funniest/happies afternoons I’d ever had. You know when you can just LET GO and not CARE what anyone in the world thinks (they think I’m crazy).

But hey, look at these cool chicks:

biting friends

Aishah later indulged in my madness (how could you resist really) and then got bitten by me.

bee cause

^I also met a bee! And look how our colours match.

I’m wearing: Top from Malaysia // F21 shorts // Saltwater sandals

confetti

I thought it was a good idea to collect pieces of confetti from the ground in an attempt to recycle/re-throw them.

I thought wrong. Don’t try this. It’s not worth the effort.

huggg

^Yeah I know you can see a little something orange but it’s just a spot of my bikini, ok?

My dress was designed/made by Joyce. Shoes are Converse. Headband from Topshop.

FESTIVAL STUFF

breakfast

We would pass this little breakfast section every morning when walking to the main festival grounds from our campsite (there are more unpictured).

Lots of great food to choose from AND free Innocent smoothies on your way out.

The camping facilities were all great – clean and sufficient to meet demand.

hulahoop

A hula hooping area! Too bad it seemed to be only for kids.
I for one happen to be pretty good at the hoop. Haha!

drawing  drawing 2

^Group/cooperative art to get your creative brain working!

craft area

You can also make your own festival headpiece using REAL LEAVES AND VINES AND FLOWERS! Nature! YES! No plasticky, gimmicky stuff! Hehe

wishing tree

Write your deepest wishes on a paper leaf and pin it unto The Wishing Tree! Or be really nosey and read what other people wrote (I chose this option).

lesbian love stories

^One of the random books you can find around the festival. Free for you to read! And full of love <3

boat swing

^Happy swings for the kids!

Oh and then there was this weirdo playing guitar with a beatbox and singing weird stuff. And mad girls dancing. I loved it:

SUNSET / NIGHTTIME

A magnificent sunset presented above us every evening. Wait maybe I missed one evening. Not too sure there.

The headliners in terms of music included Empire of the Sun, Noah and the Whale, Rodriguez, and Tom Odell. I loved the first two most!

festival sunset kigu pals

We decided it was most comfortable and warm to roam around after dark wearing our animal onesies from Kigu.co.uk.

bubble man
^The Bubbles Inc Stand

OMG this was one of my favourites ever! It just blows bubbles ALLL DAY AND ALL NIGHT LONG. Small ones, big ones, smoke filled ones, etc.

Here’s a clip of the quirky umbrella dude spinning bubbles:

flying trapeze

There was a nightly flying trapeze theatre/dance thingy going on.. it was amazing!! I forget the name of the company which runs it.

Oh and here’s a clip of Empire of the Sun performing one of their biggest hits, Walking on a Dream:

Making our way into the valley in the forest every night was an adventure in itself. You’d see scores of people in their crazy impressive fancy dress/costumes.. some draped in LED lights or smothered in paint and glitter. Lanterns and flags and other lights adorned the trees. A whole variety of music coming from different sources. People dancing. People rolling around on the ground (see? i totally belong).

You could feel a definite ENERGY. PARTY ENERGY! Haha.

green party

Then you’d past certain areas, like the green one above, where people would be chilling out or milling about as others weaved between them, heading towards the parties. Somewhat like a pre-party drinking area.. I suppose.

forest rave forest rave 2

^There are two pics of the same scene cos I couldn’t decide which coloured light was better? Haha

Who knew that partying at in the forest could be SO FREAKIN’ AWESOME? Well the festival organisers knew but anyway.

I was outta control! The music was so good! I ran up and down the hills. I jumped around till my knees hurt. We brought a shitload of glow sticks with us and shared them with strangers – who then became our dancing friends of course. I smiled till my face hurt.

And.. No festival is complete without a pair of Prizmeyez diffraction glasses! I take mine with me everywhere. EVERYWHERE.

prizmeyez

On the last night, I decided I wanted to party the entire night until I was absolutely pooped. I ended up at some after-party somewhere. I shared a bonfire with some randoms. I made some new friends. We laid on the ground together atop a hill and watched the stars glow in the night sky above. We hugged. We rolled on the ground. We talked about serious things. Ridiculous things. About food.

Soon, I felt the sun starting to rise and I thought, ‘ok, time to locate my tent’.

It was a long walk across the festival grounds. BUT SO BEAUTIFUL! Everything was shut and empty; void of people.

I realised I had my camera with me. Why not use it, right?

I took some pictures of the festival emptiness. It was rather surreal.

Then I took a picture of my face.

festival face

I came across some haystacks under one of my favourite trees that I’d lay on to watch the fairy lights above the previous nights.

‘I’m coming!’, I said to the haystack, as I set the camera on self-timer.

haystack
^Result!

I also took this..

wilderness lion

And then I made this video..

HOW did I think that it was a good idea to roll UP a hill???

All I know is.. if I was happy enough to have done that AND recorded it, it must’ve been a damn good night.

THANK YOU WILDERNESS FESTIVAL FOR A MOST SPECTACULAR WEEKEND!
See you again this summer. And you guys, get your tickets HERE

Oh yeah, thought I’d share this little comparison chart I saw in the papers following the festival, hehe:

Two weeks ago, a group of us embarked on a crazy road trip to Munich for Oktoberfest (and then on to Amsterdam). Guess how long it took to drive from London to Munich? Just guess.
17 hours. SEVENTEEN.
I nearly killed myself and ALMOST regretted going on the trip.

We were delayed as we got to Dover too early ahead of our scheduled train – get this, you can actually take a train across the channel to Calais as in your car drives INTO the train. A CAR train! It was amazing!

There were also road blocks and we got stopped by German police (immigration check) at a random section of road in the dead of the night, at which point everyone took turns to run into the pitch-darkness to pee.
I have to say, I found this part really exciting.
It was drizzling as well!

Predictably, we arrived there exhausted, agitated, and lacking sleep

But two hours later, we were at the festival grounds – time must not be wasted!
P9193710
The first tent we visited was a relatively new one and sold beers in 0.5 litre portions instead of the full litre, for the same price of €10.

To be precise, it’s €9.10 but it’s common practice not to receive change for a tenner and let it be the tip.
You do get what you pay for though – this was my favourite of the whole fest
I love its smooth orangey colour
It tasted smooth, too, and rich

P9193718
Me and a giant salted pretzel
There’d be girls with baskets walking around to sell them in the tents
P9193724
Emma managing to hold two litres
Which is NOTHING because you’d see all these crazy waitresses holding up to a dozen of these mugs AT ONCE
P9193723  P9193740

The rest of our first evening was spent outdoors in a beer garden

Where we witnessed a beautiful sunset – a blanket of thick cloud lit by golden rays beneath
P9193742

Of course, you can’t get the full effect from a mere photo.. :p

Days Two & Three

I was going to do each day separately but my memories of both have melted into each other.. it’s quite hard to recall what happened when..
The following day we were all much fresher
And got dressed in our ‘Oktoberfest Gear’
By this I mean ‘cheap beer wench outfit from eBay that you think is what girls will wear at Oktoberfest but in reality they’re all tastefully dressed in traditional dirndls, making you feel just a BIT silly’
P9203761  P9203773
Still, I liked the costume and really enjoyed wearing it!
Then again, I like looking silly..

I got myself a a red felt hat from one of the numerous souvenir stands
Which I later LOST in Amsterdam.. I’m so bummed.. don’t even talk about it..

P9203755

The interior of our Day Two tent

P9213881
Outside one of the tents
Each one is very elaborately decorated, both inside and out, and have a unique feel or vibe
For example, the Hofbrau tent is supposedly the ‘international tent’, where you’ll find a truckload of people from all around the world.. mostly Australian, I’m guessing.. hahaha
P9203765
Me, Aysh, Emma in our matching costumes hehe
I drank my beer so fast that day I felt so tipsy after just one
I think this was the drink that spurred me on to buy my red hat
P9203766
Sausage and sauerkraut
I love sauerkraut!
I used to pile it on at the bratwurst stand at Queen Victoria Market in Melbourne that I used to visit regularly for my sausage fix
P9203767

P9203768

A little bit drunk
P9213885
This is obviously a drunk face (Ryan)
P9203771
Mark and Dave in their matching festive shirts
Lederhosen are expensive to buy!
In the evening, we managed to get a table in a really lively tent
We perched ourselves on the benches
Sang along to loads of cheesy songs performed by the live band
They play a lot of really cheesy/universal stuff.. I’m not sure why.. but probably cos everyone will recognise the songs

We shouted ‘Prost‘ (that’s ‘cheers’ in German) a bazillion times to plenty-a-stranger
And heartily yelled the words to a popular German singing toast which goes Ein prosit, ein prosit der Gemutlichkeit’ even MORE times.. the band would play this every 10 minutes or so
It was one of my favourite things!
P9203775
Aysh & Ryan.. not sure what happened here
P9203778
The atmosphere was absolutely buzzing
You really had to be there
Everyone was HAPPY and loud and smiley
P9203782
Emma & I
P9213891

Me and some randoms we drank with!

+++++++++++++++++++++++
Outside the tents, the scene was like a giant carnival/fun fair
Full of colour and things to make you feel like a kid again
We went on a  good number of rides

SO EXHILIRATING
Especially when you’re half-drunk and your bladder’s about to burst 😀
P9213850
It was quite a sight – to see so many people dressed for the occasion

By the end of it I kind of wished I had a lederhosen..

P9213858

P9213859 P9213864  P9213876 P9213869 P9213862  P9213874
Yes, we wore our outfits two days in a row.. ha!
P9213899

P9213895  P9213893

P9193753

P9213903
I LOVE Oktoberfest!!

And I’m not even a beer person!

I had so much fun
The atmosphere was incredible and nothing like I ever imagined
For some reason, I imagined it to be something similar to a music festival – muddy and kind of rowdy – but it was nothing like it.
It’s hard to describe
If you haven’t been, GO!
Special thanks to the German dude, Bene, for putting us up for a couple of nights at his apartment 🙂
German people are awesome!

I have a confession.
I live in London and I don’t own a single pair of wellies or rain boots.

For some reason I never saw the need to invest in a pair, even though the weather is always so wet around here. And even when I went to the Isle of Wight Festival last year, I willed and wanted it to be sunny so much that I refused to bring along any wellies.

How was I supposed to know that it would rain on the day we arrived! I ended up having to tip-toe my way through the mud and slush and nearly fell over in my crappy sneakers BECAUSE I was being so cautious with every step.

When I was in Australia, I practically lived in Havaianas thongs (that’s ‘flip flops’ to people here) .
I loved them so much and because the climate there allowed me to wear them often, I ended up with nearly 10 pairs (In fact, every time I see the word ‘Havaianas’, my mind automatically reminisces about my amazing time there, and all the things I must’ve done whilst wearing these thongs).

I had them in black, brown, purple, blue, pink, SHINY pink, GLITTERING pink, green; I even had those strings of cloth they would sell as an add-on – you wrap them around the straps to give it a different look, and then around your ankles where you tie them up.

After moving to London however..
I LOST all of them, except ONE pair.
I think it happened in between moving flats.
The sad thing was, they were hardly even missed!

How often do you get to wear.. *ahem* ‘flip-flops around here anyway?

DSC_0178
[I wear mine most when I run away on holiday! ha!]

Yeah, what I need here is a nice, bright pair of rain boots / wellies

And guess what?

Havaianas, whose image to me has always been associated with colour and sunshine, have started to make them!

image
The new Havaianas Rain Boots / Wellies collection was launched in Selfridges in April – the party was very aptly called ‘Rain of Shine Festival’. I didn’t attend but I hear it was lots of fun, with a real festival/carnival vibe. The floor was even carpeted with grass!

The new collection boasts 8 colours:

There’s black and green

And then there are contrast colours of pink/blue, purple/pink, grey/pink, and turquoise/white

Plus two patterned/printed designs called ‘Always Summer’ and ‘Elegance’

The designs can be viewed here.

My favourite pair is the pink/blue contrast one (featured in the poster) – you know me, the brighter the better!

imageimage
Left: Daisy Lowe at the event // Right: Jameela Jamil holding up a printed pair

Once I get my hands on these (or feet, whatever), I’m set for the summer. Wet puddles and mud pits at a festival? NO PROBLEM! They’ll be perfect for when I head off to France in August to help out at a farm too, where I’ve been told to bring wellies, yay.

They’re all currently available to buy from Selfridges, and will soon be on the official Havaianas online store as well.

********************************************************

But why buy your own when you can

WIN A PAIR OF HAVAIANAS RAIN BOOTS

All you have to do is send me a picture of your perfect festival outfit!

You can either submit a photo of yourself in your chosen outfit, or if you’re shy, style a friend. The winner will receive a brand new pair of Havaianas Rain Boots in their favourite design.

Send your entries to: crazyfloss@gmail.com by the end of THURSDAY 30 JUNE 2011 (BST)

Don’t forget to include your preference and shoe size!

********************************************************

Here are a couple of photos of my own ‘festival’ outfits’ from last year:

I have three simple rules for dressing at a festival:

– minimal accessories and clothes that let you breathe/move easily (and eat/drink a lot)
– something bright and/or colourful
– comfy shoes a MUST, as I love dancing and jumping around too much!

What are yours?

SLOWLY but surely catching up on ‘stuff I did over summer’ posts

These [happy] pics are from the second day (Dance Day) of Wireless Festival in July 2010
I miss those amazing summer months! Go away September!, it’s really not your time yet!

I remember arriving earlier than Joyce
I walked onto the grounds and proceeded towards the main stage where Aysha etc were after I bought my drinks
Closer to the stage I began to hear some yelling and chanting and lots of bass
And people were SWARMING in like drones assembling in their place of worship

Turns out, Snoop Dogg was starting

”No no no no oh noooo…” I thought to myself, while moving as fast as I could in the opposite direction, ESCAPING

Imagine my relief when I rang Joyce and she tells me she’s JUST coming through the gates
We sat down on the grass far away from the stage and did our favourite thing: nothing.
When the speakers bellowed a ridiculous ‘PUT YOUR MF HANDS IN THE AIR’, we had a self-pitying laugh to ourselves as she muttered under her breath, “this is my nightmare coming true..”

I nodded in agreement.
Sorry Snoop Dogg, we really don’t like you!

P1010412

They didn’t like him either..

They were cut from a pair of leggings I got at a vintage clothes market in Amsterdam 🙂

I had never heard them before but I like them!

Joyce and her buddies

P1010444

P1010448

The sky was beautiful
There was something in the air that day
A good kind of something 🙂

P1010450

I ran to the front of the stage later on to meet Aysh etc for 2manydjs
Who were SUPER
We were dancing like crazy people and doing silly things
Everyone in the crowd was clearly having fun and just letting go
It was such a great vibe

Aysha wore this fantastic 2-piece outfit that had a sheep on it
The best part: the sheep GLOW in the dark!!!

The night was ended with a ride on the carousel
[not counting stuffing ourselves with midnight kebabs later on]

P1010451 P1010463 P1010453

Everyone was laughing and giggling as it went round and round
With all the bright lights speeding by in a blur and cold air on our faces
You could say it was somewhat magical 🙂

There’s no doubt this has been one of my best summers yet
In fact, every year seems better than the last – following this tradition I am so excited for 2011 now!

Anyway
Went to Wireless Festival with Joyce on the Friday where the lineup included The 88, Temper Trap, Pink, Plan B, Daisy Dares You.. etc etc
We had just returned from Amsterdam less than 2 days before and looked forward to hanging around the park, listening to music and Doing Nothing – just like how it was at Isle of Wight!

Through my time in London – it was my 3 year anniversary in June 😉 – I’ve never been to a real/big music festival. I was so focused on travelling that it hardly even crossed my mind! This year will be different.

Joyce brought her pet golf ball Wilson along
He’s been to heaps of places
He’s naughty. He drinks a lot and never stops smiling!

P1010370

The band I was most looking forward to seeing was The 88
Brings back memories of The O.C. days (they had a couple of songs on the soundtrack. “How Good Can It Be’ was one)!
Me and in my room in the dead of night watching episode after episode
And then not being able to wake up for uni the next day….

I was so mesmerised by guy on the keyboard
Bouncing up and down so vigorously on his stool that I thought “hmm you might as well just STAND!’”

The moment
I waited for it
Was when they performed ‘Coming Home’
I LOVE this song [got so excited typing this that it’s now playing on my iTunes]
Felt so HAPPY standing there 🙂

P1010377

The Temper Trap

P1010389

Most unexpected phenomenon of the day: US. Dancing to.. PINK!!!

Confession: Neither of us like her music

We also saw her perform at IoW so it was nothing new
Maybe it was the drinks but we ended up dancing and jumping around like crazy people and having the best time!
Not really paying much attention to the music I suppose, haha

P1010401

Look how dirty our feet got!

P1010394

Met Joyce’s friends who were also here on holiday
L-R [oh no I’m so sorry I cannot remember her name :(], Melissa, Nadia
They were so much fun to hang out with

P1010396 P1010398

Such a pity these girls don’t live in London!

P1140290

All in all.. It was a fantastic first day at the festival
Wait for the next post on Saturday 😉

I feel so lucky this summer

Today while walking home, listening to my favourite music and feeling the warm sunshine pouring down from the blue sky above, I felt so overwhelmed by happiness and positivity that I couldn’t help thinking

OH MY GOD it is just so BEAUTIFUL *cries* OMG
Happy to be alive!
