happy2013This is a VERY LONG POST – well of course, it’s a whole YEAR painfully compressed into 50 or so photos. Here are some highlights of my 2013.. I hope you enjoy reading about them as much as I had fun reminiscing 😉

If you’re not using your mobile, PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS SONG as you go through the post!
JUST DO IT

//////
It snowed in January and London was beautiful.

And when it snows, I can never behave myself.

I also kidnapped a pedestrian signboard (it wasn’t even snowing).

I went to Venice with the funnest Venetian I know – the only one with whom I would sit on a bench at 5am, when it’s 2 degrees, drinking champagne from a bottle.

I celebrated La Befana on Lido island, an annual Italian tradition.

We went kite-running in Richmond.

The Chinese New Year arrived – and so did a 14-course meal.

I finally got to wear my retro ski jacket.

We said goodbye to one of our gang – Jeremy, who was moving to Sydney for sun and surf.

There were a lot of parties.

I was reunited with great friends. And a lot of cheese.

The first few hours of 2014 were spent with a bunch of random French people. And a unicorn.

nye unicorn

The unicorn tells me that 2014 will be yet another enjoyably odd, delightfully crazy, and colourfully happy year.

AND THE UNICORN IS CORRECT.If I had to summarise my 2013 in a sentence, it would be ‘The year my social life exploded, and I spent too much time in Portugal.’

I have had a FANTASTIC year. I’ve had so many days when I was filled with such happiness that my body couldn’t contain it and I end up skipping along the street – no matter that I’m on the way to work. Sometimes I want to jump into the air and tell a tree that I love him/her!

Last year I learnt to snowboard, surf, and skateboard.. amongst other things. This year I’m going to learn to drive (even though I already have a licence.. don’t ask..), get back into swing dancing, and take some flying trapeze classes.

I love life so much and I can’t wait to see what more it has to offer!

Btw Happy New Year Everyone
If you don’t mind sparing a minute, please tell me what your favourite/happiest moment in 2013 was 🙂

*To recap very briefly, I had my luggage and passport stolen in Rotterdam the day before, and I’d spent the night in the house of a woman I’d barely known and who offered to help.
Waking up in Haarlem was a delight. Anja’s guest room was comfortable, inviting, and bright! I had these two large windows next to the bed, allowing lots of sunshine which I needed. A lot. I woke up HAPPY and wished that I could spend the day exploring Haarlem with Anja. But no. I had grown-up things to do.anja's guest room

anja's guest room 2

See how thoughtful my wonderful host was?

She left me two options for pjs – a nightie and a set of trackies. I chose the nightie. There were towels, a glass for water, and she also provided a toothbrush.

It was not until that morning as I was getting dressed that I felt the effects of losing all my stuff in that  suitcase. From the unfamiliarity of the strange new toothbrush I had to use and  having to wear the SAME CLOTHES, to the fact that I had to go out with.. no eyebrows.. (hey I’m just not very hairy, ok) – it all started to become annoyingly real.

My make up. My expensive Shu Uemura makeup palettes. My vintage sequinned jumper (you can see it here). All my CLOTHES. My best underwear! My kaleidoscope from Porto. The lovely new French Connection shoes that were gifted to me in time for the trip (luckily I did take pics, you’ll see them soon. Thank you Spreaditfast). My favourite parka from Copenhagen. My best bangles from SEA. All my funky headbands and ACCESSORIES. Macbook/camera chargers and Apple magic mouse. All the business cards I’d collected at the conference. ETC ETC ETC.

It was just so sad to think about it.

And so there I was – dressed in yesterday’s clothes and looking blah. You know when you look just terrible, you kind lose the bounce in your step? I lost my bounce that day.

That is, until Anja pulled out a mysterious pink carrier bag from the backseat of her car as she dropped me off at the train station.

“It’s a little goodie bag I put together to cheer you up”

Seriously how sweet is this woman?? I LOVE HER! We then hugged goodbye. I wish I could’ve hugged her for longer!

goodie bag from anja
^The contents of Anja’s goodie bag.

There were some of her own handmade jewellery, compact mirror, a couple of Estée Lauder eyeshadow palettes, a holographic postcard, pretty paper towels, toys, and even biscuits!

It reminded me of my high school days when my friends and I used to exchange gifts of random items we thought would make each other happy – be it crayons, a pot of fake slime, sweets, earrings, or simply a card that read ‘I Love You!’.

BACK TO THE HAGUE

I was lucky enough to have a friend from London make some calls to the Malaysian Embassy at The Hague for me, so they were expecting my visit and assured me that I would be able to obtain an emergency passport on the day.

green hague

One of the plus sides of this tragedy (I like to be dramatic) is that I got to see The Hague on sunshiny day.

I enjoyed the tram rides towards the Embassy. The whole city was rather green.. so green that the air smelt green. Do you know what I mean?

malaysian embassy at the hague
^Just outside the Malaysian Embassy. Like in London, it was located in a nice area full of.. other embassies.

It was about noon when I arrived. Just like back home, everything was rather informal.. there weren’t many people there. I had to fill in this form that was completely in Malay, and where the date field had a pre-printed ’19 _ _’ . THAT’s how old the form is. Of course, my Malay is so terrible that I had to ask the officer if I could please write my answers in English.

Then.. I had to take a 20-minute walk to the nearest studio for some passport-sized photographs.

peace palace the hague
^On the way there, I stumbled upon The Peace Palace (Vredespaleis), which houses the International Court of Justice (the principal judicial body of the United Nations).

It was so pretty, especially the grounds. There were a couple of groups of tourists crowding around the gates with their cameras.

Once I had my photographs taken and dropped them back at the embassy, I took a tram back into the city. I wanted to go back to the Escher Museum (I love that guy.. his art is so trippy!) to re-buy some souvenirs that I’d lost in my luggage. I had to! There was a cool 3D viewer and  large, colourful feather pens. If you know Escher’s work.. just imagine seeing those in 3D. Whoa man.. I couldn’t leave without it.

^I was so lucky that it was a beautiful day with blue skies.

I thought this photo was just so Dutch, with the bicycle, the tram tracks and the bazillion windows in grid formation typical of their architecture.

I was so excited to find that a big flea market was taking place in the area. I browsed like EVERY STALL.. picked up a couple of cool things too 😉

^Front of the Escher Museum (will write about this in another post).

Do you think they should clean the walls?? Looks rather black to me.

After my little half-day sightseeing walk, it was time to journey back to the Embassy to collect my emergency document (€15). And do other crappy things, like ring up my insurance company to see if I could make a claim. I got into a bit of a fight with the operator – you know how these people are horrible; they try and make it as difficult as possible for you when it comes to making a claim.

I also contacted British Airways. Unlike the insurance company (it was INSUREANDGO, btw), they were extremely helpful and supportive. I explained that I’d missed my flight to London and why. For only £27, I was given a new ticket for a flight departing that same night. THANK YOU BA for your understanding and kindness – it definitely made my ordeal much easier to deal with!

HELLO AGAIN ROTTERDAM

rotterdam centraal

Feeling much better knowing that I’d be on my way home soon, I arrived in Rotterdam again. It was my fourth time that trip/that week…

Above you can see construction going on around Rotterdam Centraal Station. It was cool! I took some time to walk around and marvel at their tall, shiny buildings.

rotterdam skyscraper

I admired the buildings for a long time. Very long time. Just couldn’t get over how shiny this building was, too!

I had some time to kill, so I turned to Twitter and asked this girl (Kim) that I met during the conference who worked with Rotterdam Marketing. She mentioned a place called BAR (NEW BAR) that recently opened at Schieblock (a < ten-minute walk from the station). So off I went…

new bar rotterdam menu new bar schieblock

The vibe was really cool and relaxed, kinda like the cafes we have here around East London. There were only a few people.. or hipsters rather, lounging around with their juices and MacBooks.

new bar table

Naturally, I joined in.

new bar burger

I had an AMAZING meal.. I love how it’s a lot more normal in the Netherlands to have a fried egg in your sandwich/burger. It sealed the deal, you know?

I hung out and had some Me Time at BAR until it was REALLY time to go. I was so exhausted from the last 24 hours and I’d been carrying my heavy pink backpack with the whole time. So, as I was on the way to the bus stop to get the airport shuttle, I pulled out what had been my saving grace that day: a joint (hey I was in Rotterdam hehe). It saved me all the way until outside the airport.

goliath in rotterdam
^Goliath posing for a goodbye pic.

rotterdam airport

Despite the shitty circumstances, it really was a beautiful day when I left.

clouds from a plane

I pretty much passed out completely during my short flight.

Had no problems whatsoever at Heathrow Airport immigration. I only had to wait for about five minutes while the officer went to check on the system to verify my UK residence visa.

It was kinda strange to arrive home from a week away without a suitcase. When I got into my room, I just thought, “Hmm, at least I don’t have to unpack!”. That night seems a blur to me right now.. but I think after having a shower, I crashed into bed straightaway.

THE BEGINNING OF A NIGHTMARE

It wasn’t until the next day (Thursday) when I tried to get back into London life that I had the opportunity to reflect and put some real thought into the consequences of having my luggage + passport stolen.

These were the problems I now faced:

  • I had a flight to Toronto departing in less than seven days.
  • I had no passport.
  • The Canadian Embassy had not even approved my SECOND application for a visitor visa, which I re-submitted in Rotterdam based on my OLD passport number.
  • The coming Monday was a bank holiday (i.e. the embassies would be closed).
  • The cost of replacing my UK visa sticker was £860.
  • Completing the tedious paperwork for my insurance claim.
  • I had to go shopping (i.e. go broke) for new toiletries, makeup, clothes, MacBook/camera charger, etc.
  • I lost my online banking security key.

The first thing I did that morning was go to the Malaysian Embassy in London. I was hopeful. So you can imagine my face when the officer there told me bluntly, “There’s no way you can get your new passport in time. It normally takes at least four weeks. You need these supporting documents to apply *pulls out LONG LIST of documents I could never secure at such short notice*. I advise you to cancel your trip to Canada”

Literally, I burst into tears outside his office. I was just so STRESSED from everything! I sat on a bench outside for ages, not wanting to leave and still refusing to believe that I COULDN’T get my way. With tremendous help of a great friend who made some calls and found out the name of a person I should speak to within the Embassy, I dried my tears and marched back inside.

I asked for this person and we spoke in a private room about my situation. With the help of my very pathetic face, I got the list of supporting documents cut in less than half, and the permission to email electronic copies of what they needed directly to his email address. He said that if I could get it all through by Tuesday (after the public hol), I could have my new passport by Wednesday. My flight departs on Thursday morning.

OKAY. I took a deep breath and went on my way to work.

When I got home that evening, it was cold and rainy. I got to my flat and attempted to open the door with the set of keys that my flatmate had kindly copied for me in advance. THEY DIDN’T WORK.

The frustration and dejection at this point were so much for me to take that I just slumped onto the floor and sat there staring into space for a while before my face was covered in my angry tears. I was so ANGRY. WHY was this happening to me? WHY did I have to encounter such an asshole of a person who had nothing better to do than steal my ENTIRE SUITCASE and RUIN EVERYTHING for me??? I HATED HIM. I HATED HIS GUTS and his STUPID FACE and wished him all sorts of horrible things.

So there I was on the floor: terribly dressed (feeling ugly), with flat hair, no makeup, puffy eyes, and wet from the rain. I was like this wet scraggly rat with no home.

I let myself cry for a few minutes until I just couldn’t bear the patheticness of my own behaviour. I had to pull myself together. I knew I WASN’T an angry, sad person. I was a happy, positive person.

Once I was done crying, I rang my friend Reena and went to her house to wait for my flatmate to get home. I was fine. I just had to wait a bit, that’s all. I had to focus on my one main goal for the week:

Get what I need to make my trip to Toronto.

This was only the beginning..

Hi friends, I’m still alive! I’ve had such a crazy three weeks that I haven’t had the chance to sit down with my laptop until TODAY. In summary, I went to Rotterdam and had the most fabulous time.. and then my entire suitcase, including my passport, was stolen from a train. Because of that, I nearly missed my trip to Toronto – and did I tell you my Canadian visa application was REJECTED? – the following week. Remember that post I wrote about the most interesting person I met while travelling? It was an entry to a little competition and I won it!. But I made it. Barely. And it was AMAZING. Now I’m back and trying to adjust to London life again..
OK let’s start from the beginning. Three weeks ago, I left work early and boarded a flight to Rotterdam to attend TBU Europe, a relatively new travel blogging conference that takes place twice a year (the last one was in Porto. PORTO!!! I love that place. Can’t believe I missed THAT, but anyway..). I was really excited! It was to be my first conference. Of any kind. EVER. I booked myself a really nice place just across the conference venue, that I found on Airbnb.what I packed

^In my backpack: conference schedule, spare cardigan, iPhone charger (we all know just how shit the iPhone battery life is), Goliath the mouse, and Panda.

blogging at the airport

^I tried to get some ‘work’ done while waiting at Heathrow Airport. Was editing some more pics from Iceland <– this just NEVER ends.

view from the plane

^It was BEAUTIFUL in London as I left it. Clear blue skies.

^A Vine video that I made whilst on the plane.  Click to play.
(Follow me on Vine! the name is SMALLCRAZY).

And then.. I arrived in Rotterdam. GREY AND RAINY.

Some holiday…”

But look at their luggage reclaim area! I found it so amusingly cute. It was so woody that it even smelt it.

A bus from Rotterdam Airport to Centraal cost me €3 (and the ticket is valid on public transport for one hour). By the time I arrived at the apartment late that night, I was looking rather like a wet and tired rat. My host, Jan, was super.. and so was my little top floor studio.

painting my nails

^Planted myself on the bed and began painting my nails in between blogging.. totally havin a party.

my room in rotterdam

It was so much fun unpacking and placing all my stuff around the room the next day!

I missed the morning opening remarks and keynote talks at the conference. I was just SO TIRED.

TBU ROTTERDAM & THE MAINPORT HOTEL

TBU Rotterdam took place at The Mainport Hotel, a brand new (literally it opened ONE DAY before the conference began) five-star design hotel located in Leuvehaven, near the water. A lot of the attendees stayed there out of convenience.. but sadly it was out of my price range.

I WISHED I could’ve stayed there though, because it looked super cool and I heard that some rooms contained your own little jacuzzi and SAUNA.

^Awesome chandelier lights hanging off what seems to be a giant upside-down compass. Without arrows.

mainport reception desk

^The long white reception desk looked like something out of a sci-fi movie.

^I hung out here a lot.. mostly to use the free wifi. And to pretend that I was really busy.

When in fact, I was doing this… >>

Just capturing the mood!

ANYWAY

All delegates/attendees were greeted with a  goodie bag including lots of information about Rotterdam and a three-day public transport card. I was (just a little) embarrassed to have turned up so late.. but I really didn’t wanna be shuffling around like a zombie all day. I had to turn up looking GOOD.

So eventually, I made it to the main room for the ‘Creating Content for Travellers’ presentation by Gary Bembridge and subsequent panel discussion. I was particularly excited about the panel discussion as one of the speakers on it was Gemma of Retrochick. True to form, she turned up with the most amazing vintage style hairdo and she was great when she spoke.

^This photo was taken by Anja of The Curly Traveller, who was attracted to me because of all the colours and toys and stickers I had with me. Anja turned out to be a kindred spirit and a gem – you’ll see why in a later post.

My jumper is from Topshop.

I took the above pics during the couple of short breaks in between. My toys are balanced on my pink business-card holder…. my rather LAME card holder I should say, cos it barely holds ten cards at once.

clare at tbu  cold starter

^I sat next to Clare of Need Another Holiday, and we had lunch together too – this was provided downstairs. The drink on the right is actually a cold soup starter.. can’t remember what it was called but it was something with tomato.

Clare was super sweet and lovely and funny.. She lives up north and hopefully I’ll see her again too. She writes about how to make the most out of travel while keeping a full time job.

lunch at mainport hotel

^I have to admit that the food served at the hotel was not exactly mouth-watering. But y’know what it was there and available.. so I simply reminded myself that at least I didn’t have to walk out in the rain to find my own lunch!

HOTEL BAZAR, ROTOWN, & NRC ROTTERDAM

hotel bazar rotterdam

Clare and I went to a huge middle eastern restaurant (part of a hotel) on Witte de Withstraat (one of the main streets in Rotterdam where all the bars and restaurants are) called Bazar, following recommendations from other people who had been.

The place was huge and full of LIGHTS! I was completely enticed.

wine at bazar

We shared a bottle of wine.

food at hotel bazar

Ordered a couple of main dishes to share, too. The food was amazing! I loved it all. Everything was tasty and juicy and satisfying.

The TBU Networking Event for the first night was at a bar/live music venue called Rotown.

goliath at rotown

^Goliath came along too, but he found it a little boring since he couldn’t drink.

I managed to stop by a coffee-shop on the way. Got some goodies and proceeded to befriend the naughty people of the conference who would indulge with me. Sometimes I think this is the best way to make friends.. (as I’ve said before.. this is an honest blog!)

witte de withstraat

^Buzzing Witte de Withstraat on a Friday night.

Upon leaving Rotown, Clare and I stumbled upon an EVEN COOLER scene at a place called NRC.

nrc rotterdam  nrc rotterdam 2

The music was fab, the ceilings were HIGH and they had a giant disco ball! And cherry blossoms inside.

We spotted a group of Dutch girls wearing bodycon dresses and all made up.. but on their feet, all were wearing sneakers or Converse shoes. Super awesome! I love girls who dress to DANCE.

I had a fantastic first day both in terms of the conference and Rotterdam city. While it provided lots of useful content and an opportunity to learn lots of new things, I thought the best part was all the amazing travel-minded people I got to meet and play with. And Rotterdam was pretty cool.. I loved seeing all the tall buildings and modern architecture – being in Europe, this was rare.

More later! X

This is one of my favourite stories to tell, and so I thought, ‘why not share it here?’In the summer of 2011, I signed up to volunteer for 2+ weeks at a remote vegetable/fruit farm in the Languedoc-Rousillon region (south of France) via WWOOF France. Last year, I wrote a post describing the beautiful farm where I stayed, Les Trois Moulins. In summary: I got kicked out of the farm. After just two nights.

People always ask me, ‘WHY? HOW?’ What did you DO?’ with immense curiosity. Here’s how.

When I arrived at the rather rural Castelnaudary train station, Blanche, the woman who owned the farm, came to pick me up with her car. From the moment we met, I knew she took a certain disliking to me. I could tell by the way she looked at me and by her body language. You know when you just KNOW?

She clearly wasn’t interested in me or in getting to know me. I endured a super awkward car ride that lasted 20 minutes. Nevertheless, I filled my mind with only positive thoughts and convinced myself that she simply wasn’t the talkative type.

When the car pulled up in the driveway, she got out and.. left me there. Again, no matter.

“I have arms and legs.. it’s fine I’ll carry all my bags up myself!”

I was then distracted and struck by how eccentric and pretty the whole place was (click here for more). I met Bernard, her French/Moroccan husband. He had been a chef for over 30 years and was quite the quirky man. He was friendly and funny and warm, unlike Blanche the iron woman.

I felt slightly disappointed that there were no other volunteers like myself at the farm. BUT, after unloading my things in the bedroom upstairs I sauntered down to get familiar with the house and surroundings; and Bernard introduced me to a German guy called Axel.

Axel was sort of a long-term volunteer who helped out at the farm in exchange for food, water, and electricity. He was a nomad. He lived in a caravan happily planted on a plot of land next to the farmhouse with…… his donkey, with whom he had travelled over 10,000km through Europe on foot!!

He also had quite a bushy beard and so I couldn’t help thinking of him as ‘Jesus’ in my mind…

Anyway, Axel was so friendly and accommodating, you would think that HE was the host. He showed me around the whole area and pointed out important things I should know. I met the two resident cats, the dog, and the old horse who lived close by.

P8022394

After my ‘orientation’ was over, I got changed into some bathers (it was a sizzling 35 degrees celcius) and went along with Axel to take his donkey for a walk up and over a nearby hill. It was fun! I’d never walked a donkey before..

Eventually we reached a medium-sized lake. It wasn’t the most picturesque lake, but good enough for a quick swim while the donkey grazed on.. dried up shrubbery nearby. In that heat, getting into the water was like heaven!

On the way back, Axel told me more about his donkey (whose name I’ve clearly forgotten..so I’ll just call him Donkey) and the places they had been together. We had a nice chat about some serious things (like his decision to live nomadically) and some nonsense things (donkey poop). According to him, all he needs is himself and Donkey. He later showed me the little enclosed area he had built for Donkey near his caravan, and how Donkey would sometimes be cheeky and try to break through the fence… which was not even a real fence unless you consider two horizontal strings a fence, haha.

DAY 2

The next morning, as instructed by Blanche, I woke up and got ready very early. Had a rather awkward breakfast in the kitchen where she expected me to know where everything was. Luckily, I was saved by a cheerful Bernard who joined in soon.

I spent my first day working on one of the vegetable patches with everyone.. and boy was it hard work.  Hard, sweaty work. And who knew there were such a thing as gardening gear? Special rubbery shoes, gloves, hats, etc.

By the end of the afternoon, I was freaking knackered. I felt totally beaten down by the blazing sunshine. Like the sun had taken the form of a giant HOT shoe and stamped on me. ME, the sun-lover..

Anyway, sensing that I must’ve been a bit lonely without other young people around, Axel suggested that we walk to town to grab a drink, with Bernard. By ‘town’, it literally means one street, with an all-in-one cafe/bar/restaurant, one shop, and some essential amenities. It was the kind of place where everyone knew each other.. and their families. The cafe owner was really friendly and quite the entertaining clown 😉

^Ever so smiley Bernard with my toys, Goliath and Dino.
Dinner was served on the farmhouse terrace later and included wild boar that was hunted the day before. With Bernard’s superb culinary skills, food at the house was always delicious.

We ate and drank and talked and stared into the night sky. As Blanche was rather cold and Bernard spoke little English, I spoke mostly with Axel. He liked to read a lot. He enjoyed the sound of thunder. He liked cold showers. He told me a bit more about his caravan and his nomadic life. He didn’t know where he was going next – I loved this fact about him. I was slightly envious. The four of us also shared a joint (this is an honest blog!), and so I have to say: it was a very nice night.

DAY 3 – KICKED-OUT DAY

On this morning, the men had gone away with the car to do some shopping. It was about 10am and I was working on the same vegetable patch, when Blanche comes up to me and abruptly tells me that she wanted me to leave.

In shock, I asked her why. She said some rather odd things, like ‘I don’t think you’re enjoying it’, and ‘You’re not doing it right’. I figured that they were all excuses for the simple fact that she didn’t like me, so I agreed that I would go by the afternoon (her terms). But who knows, maybe she was right – maybe I WAS really terrible at farm work! When the men returned, I could hear them having an argument with Blanche, questioning her actions. It was a little dramatic, and traumatic.

I admit I did cry a little in my room. I felt dejected, confused, and I didn’t know the answer to the most important question: WHERE TO GO/WHAT TO DO NOW??

My return flight was two weeks away and I had never really travelled solo before.

I logged into the one house computer with an internet connection and started researching. I emailed my close friends and looked at nearby farms I might be able to move to, but without much luck.

I later found comfort in Axel’s caravan. He’d invited me there so we could discuss the situation privately. He said he was sorry that this happened and that he was also as puzzled as I was.

Sensing that I was deflated, he started pulling out various maps and spread them all out on the table. I noticed that he kept a LOT of maps with him (well of course). We considered a number of options: I could travel farther inland up to Toulouse and then Bordeaux. Or I could go the coast, to Narbonne, down through Perpignan into Spain. He shared with me places he had been before where you could stay for free – such as a yoga/meditation retreat somewhere.. or a monastery. He knew heaps of things and lots of names of places I hadn’t even heard of! He was so kind, calm, and encouraging.

As I listened to him talk about my options, I realised something. I realised that.. THIS WAS AN OPPORTUNITY.

Suddenly, it became exciting. It was still a bit sh*t, but exciting. I saw the bright side.

I was free. I didn’t have to spend every day doing farm work.
I could go off an EXPLORE!

^It was just you and I from here on, Goliath!

That afternoon, I packed my bags and said goodbye. Bernard gave me a long hug and whispered, ‘i’m really so sorry’. I told him I wouldn’t forget all those nifty cooking tips he’d given me. I thanked Axel being such a wonderful presence in my short-lived farm experience and wished him lots of luck on his next journey, wherever it might lead to.

At Castelnaudary train station, I politely hugged Blanche goodbye and thanked her for having me.

THE NEXT TWO WEEKS

I spent the first night in nearby Carcassonne.

^I went on a canal cruise and stopped to take pictures at a vineyard.

^I stopped in Marseilles for a while.

^I ended up in beautiful Nice, where I was fortunate enough to stay at the most fantastic hostel, Villa St Exupéry Gardens (thank you Ulf for having me).

^I learnt how to bake macarons (now a forgotten skill).

^I went canyoning in the Verdon Gorge (amazing).

^I went swimming by the Promenade des Anglais

^I made a day trip to Eze Village, one of the prettiest little towns in Europe.

^I went scuba diving at St Jean Cap Ferrat.

^I made friends and partied with three Australian girls.

^I sunbathed and swam in Cap D’Ail, a cute little beach just west of Monaco.

^I visited Monaco for the second time in my life.

^I finally got to see the leaning tower of Pisa.

^I fell in love with Florence (can you believe this is part of the riverbank there?).

^I met Tania and Ana, two South Americans whom I asked to please share a 1kg Bistecca Fiorentina (Florentine steak) with me.

^I went to Siena and watched the town prepare for Il Palio

^I climbed up a hill in San Gimignano, which was also home to ‘the best gelato in the world

Thank You Axel

For looking after me on the farm, and for encouraging and inspiring me to live free and challenge myself. Thanks, for letting me see that it was okay to travel alone and live by your own rules. Those two spontaneous weeks marked my transition into a better, more awesome person. It gave me the courage to step out of a long, unhappy relationship – in fact, I did this on the day I returned – and put myself back on the path to becoming the real ME.
You were definitely the most interesting person I’ve ever met while travelling. I mean c’mon.. a caravan, donkey, and a big beard?? Hehe.
Hmm, I guess I should thank Blanche for kicking me out of the farm. It was one of the best things that’s  ever happened to me 🙂

*For more info, check out my first post on Snowboxx Festival
On the Saturday morning (the morning of our first full day), we loaded up on the hotel breakfast and hurried to the resort. We were overwhelmingly excited and couldn’t wait to get on the snow.As it was my first time snowboarding (I am a skier) and Reena hadn’t been in years, we booked daily lessons for five days. They were three hours per session and had a VERY KIND starting time of 12pm.

Arinsal Ski Resort, Andorra

The town of Arinsal is connected to Arinsal Ski Resort via two services – a gondola and a chairlift that connects to one of the hotels (I think it’s Hotel Crest).

The easiest one for us was the gondola, which was a mere 3-5 minute walk from our hotel – although the return trip isn’t that easy since it’s uphill and we’re either tired from snowboarding or drunk from partying..

view from gondola
^View from the bridge to the gondola

view from hotel
^View from our hotel

Our Snowboxx ticket included a 5-day lift pass., so we didn’t have to bother purchasing one separately.

^Gondola scenery

We had to collect our hire equipment first (one day I will have MY OWN) and because eeeeeveryone else from the festival had the same idea, we were stuck in a massive queue. We were late by about half an hour for our first lesson – like bad students.

Yep, the queue was so long that Reena planted herself on the tiles..

I compare the waiting experience to receiving a Christmas present early, but then having to WAIT till actual Christmas day to open it. However when the day finally comes, it’s freaking awesome!

19-IMG_8694.jpg
^Our classmates and instructor on the baby/learning slope.

Our instructor was an Argentinian guy called Augusto. He was cool! He snowboards, skis, surfs, dives, and.. who knows what else. He alternates between being in Europe and South America / snowsports and beach sports. What a life!

He was really patient, and funny too.

On the first day we had to use this totally beginnerish ‘lift’ called the Magic Carpet. It’s like a walkalator with a very slight incline. It goes very slowly and gently, and takes you to the top of the learning slope, haha.

After a couple of rounds on the Magic Carpet, Augusto let us go up our first chairlift – a 4-person one.

One of the things I really love about skiing/snowboarding is the attire. Everything’s so bright and colourful. And for once, I don’t stand out like some crazy neon person. In fact, I felt rather.. DULL on the slopes during the days when I wore my boring ol’ white/pink ski jacket and GREY pants. How odd, as usually I’m one of the most colourful people in a crowd 🙂

^Reena, wearing my Billabong Boys’ size 12 jacket.. 🙂

Speaking of kids, we were rather impressed by all the tiny tots zipping around on their skis (snowboarding is not recommended for very young children).. they looked so cute and cool at the same time.

^OK This girl isn’t that young.. but I just didn’t manage to get a picture of the really SMALL ones.

There was even a girl of about five or six who was teaching her mom to ski. I overheard her giving her mom tips while helping lead her to the charlift queue 🙂

^View from one of the larger chairlifts, which we took on the second day.

Surf Restaurant/Bar/Club

I had to insert a section about Surf Restaurant  because it was where I consumed the largest burger I’ve ever had in my life.

A 300g patty. IT WAS SO GOOD! Look, it’s nearly the size of Reena’s head.

My friends and I are obsessed with these ‘paradise’ glasses at the moment..

^Goliath, my pet mouse, joined in the fun too.

Surf is reputed for its steaks and apparently has the ‘best steak in Arinsal’, although some beg to differ. I didn’t try it in the end, so I can’t really say, but looking at the grill on the way out made me wish I DID try it.

Retro Ski Day

Sunday was Retro Ski Day (in association with DOS Clothing)!
As you can imagine, I was really excited. I could finally wear that 80s ski jacket that I found at Brick Lane a couple of months prior.

^Zorro in a matching bright pink North Face jacket.

Despite my very AWESOME jacket, I wasn’t nearly as retro as many of the other festival-goers on the slope. There were groups of people in matching retro-gear, animal costumes, cowboys,.. in fact all sorts of random crazy costumes. It was so much fun just to watch!

^These penguins were in Zorro’s skiing class. We bumped into each other at a cafe somewhere up on the mountain.

^With Joe, a classmate.
Joe’s wearing an amazing women’s yellow zebra-print ski onesie. Haha 🙂

^With my beloved Reena.

After a productive day of learning to turn/connect turns, everyone headed back to Arinsal town for nighttime festivities, i.e. food, music, drinks.

^We kept our jackets and switched to leggings.

Aren’t these hotel lobby pics simply glam?

^Fancy dress peeps.. and a suspicious-looking blow-up doll..

When I saw this lot pass by I couldn’t help myself from stopping them in the middle of the street for a photo.

This was unfortunately one of the LAST pics on my phone for the night.. which ended up being kind of a blur..

Monday – Main Event at Panoramix

So Reena and I missed our snowboarding lesson the next day…
I’d never felt so DEAD when waking up before. I’m lucky enough not to experience any headaches or hangovers (ever) but boy did I feel like I was dying that morning.
We did surprise ourselves by dragging our sorry bodies down to breakfast, but once we ate what little food we could manage, it was back to bed where we stayed for HOURS. Anyone who saw us would’ve thought we were a couple of corpses.

Nevertheless, we still got up eventually and managed a couple of hours practising on the slopes by ourselves (sans our instructor, Augusto).

Reena’s wearing my blue Billabong jacket (as in pic earlier) because she LOST hers the night before. But to her credit, she did find it in the end.

Monday was special because the gondola was going to be running special services through the evening and night to take people to/from the Snowboxx main event, which was being held at the outdoor Bar Panoramix stage at Arinsal Ski Resort. There was going to be a party on the slopes!

We stayed in our ski attire because we didn’t have enough time between dinner to get changed. This turned out to be good because it snowed non-stop that night.

The lineup from the night included Roses Gabor, Pedestrian, and The Other Tribe. The music was a mix of dubstep, electronic, garage, maybe some dance. Admittedly, I really am not a fan of dubstep.. but the combination of an amazing party location and a young, fun crowd made the night AWESOME.

^Zorro, me, Reena

It was pretty much blizzard-ing all through the night.

Imagine – dancing on a mountain with lights and music plus fast, angry snowflakes rushing at your face. It was crazy fun!

The finale had the team of snowboard/ski instructors coming down the slope with torches of fire. Our instructor, Augusto, was somewhere in there!

^Here is a compilation of some rubbish clips I managed to get that night.. You can spot me dancing like a moron at the start.

^This poor guy lost a bet with his friends and his punishment was to wear a PLASTIC BAG over his head during the whole party.

^Another poor dude who probably lost another bet and is paying the price by having to do push-ups on the snow. LOL!

After last night’s trek up the volcano, we rewarded ourselves by sleeping in little.Waking up at Casa Del Sole always felt calm and relaxed. I loved waking up there! I loved opening the door to our room only to be greeted by what seemed like GUARANTEED SUNSHINE on the island, the clear blue sky, the sight of the old orange hammock, and also the big laundry sink.

We had the dreaded task of walking uphill to the church/town square to return our rented hiking boots, however. What was most dreadful about it was me having to stuff my poor feet back INTO those heavy things that morning (my sandals were left at the shop in exchange for the boots). Could almost hear my feet screaming ‘NOooooo!!!’. Well, I survived.. so never mind enough complaining.

Took a few photos along the way:

P6207743.JPG P6207745.JPG P6207746

Look! It’s Francesca driving the Casa Del Sole taxi.. 😀

P6207747.JPG

“Aperto” means “open” in Italian.

P6207748.JPG

Joyce and I kept going on about how all the flowers on the island were just so PERFECT and VIBRANT. Many a time we had to touch and feel them just to be absolutely sure that they were real. Yup, all real flora there!

P6207752.JPG

Couldn’t help but wander into one of the many souvenir/craft shops near the church square. The souvenirs on the island were tasteful and largely handmade by artists, unlike in big cities like Rome or Paris or Barcelona etc etc, where the souvenirs are tacky, plasticky, and overpriced.

I got myself a volcano magnet and a wall hook with a sailboat on it.

P6207754.JPG

When I was in Rovinj, Croatia (oops, I haven’t written anything about this.. yet) two weeks prior to this trip, there were a few shops that sold handmade wooden boats too! I had gotten one there so I stopped myself from adding to the collection.. wasn’t too hard, as the prices here were much higher than in Croatia.

Lunch was at a place called Luciano’s – a tip from a local woman we asked.

P6207765.JPG P1015585.JPG

We sat on a big balcony with a great view of the sea (of course). Joyce decided to do a photoshoot with our mice, her other toys, my ring, and.. half-eaten bread??!

The plan after lunch was to take the loooooonggg walk back to the beach that we were on the day before.

This proved to be quite challenging..because of how HOT it was that day. I think we distracted ourselves by taking lots of pictures.

P6207773.JPG  P6207774.JPG P1015595.JPG P6207776.JPG

This, by the way, is not Joyce simply taking a close-up photograph of a cactus. It’s her taking a picture of her PET GOLFBALL, WILSON, carefully placed in a little nook in the cactus plant.

P1015599.JPG P1015603.JPG  P1015605.JPG

Apparently, I was touching leaves and flowers a lot…. see, I had to check that they were real! Or maybe not.. cos these were quite obviously not plastic….

P1015606.JPG

Joyce captured me in one of my ‘zones’.. (crazy zone, that is). I was somehow so fascinated by this man painting a little red star on his boat. He was delicately peeling off the tape he used as a stencil.. one by one..slowly. I watched for so long that by the time he finished, I clapped for him. I might have even said ‘yay!’.

This gave me the opportunity to get to know my new friend, so we started talking and guess what! He had one of those little buggies and so gave us a lift to the beach that we were MELTING towards. His name was Stefano and he had previously lived in Melbourne, too. I was like, “OH I miss that gelato shop on Lygon Street!”, to which he replied, Yes Lygon Street… IL DOLCE FREDDO!. Hehe.

Bikini – Topshop
Sandals – Saltwater
P1015619.JPG P6207782.JPG

We buried Maurice (Joyce’s mouse) and Goliath (my mouse) in the sand for fun.

Joyce tried to find Wilson a girlfriend.. also known as the most symmetrically round black pebble you could find on the beach = IMPOSSIBLE! So poor Wilson remained a bachelor throughout the trip.. oh well!

P6207790.JPG

Strolling back to find food, we met a man called Frank who runs a small tour company from one of the colourful booths seen near the pier. As you can see, it was called ‘Frank International’. They were doing boat tours  for €15 that evening, at sunset, where you’d go round the other side of the island and watch the volcano hopefully erupt.

P6207812.JPG

Having two hours to kill, we planted ourselves at what we thought was the most lively bar/cafe on the strip – Fronte Del Porto.

They played a really diverse range of music.. so sometimes I’d be happily bopping to something.. and then the next moment I’d be silently wishing my ears didn’t work (like when they played that super, super annoying Gotye song that I’d always hated from the beginning).

P6207799.JPG  P6207801.JPG P6207794.JPG P6207810.JPG

As the sun went down the sky turned a magnificent lilac shade and the water was so still it was GLIMMERING. Like a big flat mirror in the shade of lilac. At one point it was difficult to tell where the line between the sea and the sky was. Seemed like both were melting into each other.. like a painting!

P6207814.JPG

Thought this photo was funny because of the family so obviously staring at me getting my photo taken next to a tiny yellow taxi with its nonchalant driver in it.

Boat Trip

I was super excited about the boat trip because it meant getting closer to that MIRROR-WATER. Just look!

By ‘look’ I mean look many times.. (lots of pics to follow). It’s just one of those things you repeatedly take pictures of because you keep trying to capture the beauty on camera even though you know you.. can’t. Anyhow I think these are some great shots.. ha ha

P6207817.JPG P6207818.JPG

It was like nothing I’d ever seen before. Just so beautifully calm.

P6207819.JPG P6207824.JPG P6207825.JPG P6207827.JPG P6207836.JPG P6207841.JPG P6207848.JPG P6207864.JPG

We got permission from Frank to go for a quick swim.. the other passengers thought we were mad. But it was so much fun!

P6207853.JPG

We’d already seen the volcanic eruptions during the hike the day before so didn’t pay much attention to the volcano this time. Well I didn’t anyway.

Once back on shore I treated myself to more pasta.. and peach juice! One my favourite things about Europe is the fruit juices. I’m not confined to apple/orange and can instead have pear, peach, or strawberry (my top 3 in random order).

I’ve been trying (with what little time I have to spend at home) to go through the collection of photos I’ve amassed over the last many months and share what I’ve wanted to share but never got around to.

Today, it’s one of my fav outfits (cos it’s so comfy) from the late summer last year.
If digital photos could collect dust, there would be a thick layer on these for sure!

On the afternoon these pics were taken, I had taken a walk to Camden Market.

It was a really HAPPY day because I stumbled into a shop selling lots printed shirts, carpets, and rugs. It was full of colour, but particularly, the music in the shop was just SO HAPPY. I spoke to the owner asking what it was and it turned out to be Kenyan music. Lots of drums and marimbas and upbeat tunes.

Listening to it, my mind was bursting with all sorts of things.. coconuts. beaches. spice bowls. banana trees. dancing barefoot in red earth. hot, hot sunshine. hammocks. hula hoops! Just wanted to DANCE!

Anyway, long story short.. I ended up buying two CDs from the dude and have since been subconsciously planning to throw a tropical rainforest/beach party with the music. One day it will happen!

OK I’ve taken way too long organising/editing my pics for this post because I keep getting distracted by the music I’m listening to (I get up to sing and dance around my room), but ANYWAY here they are!As mentioned previously, I was superduper excited about the forecast of snow and really wanted to get out of town where there are much less people and a better landscape for snow!

On the Friday, I did some (lots of) research and booked a room at a B&B plus train tickets to… Peaslake. I hadn’t even HEARD of this place before. I then learnt that this tiny village had a population of less than 1500. It has one resident-run school, one shop, and no public transport. How perfect!

Situated between Guildford and Woking (south-west London), the nearest train station was Gomshall. Upon arriving at the station on Saturday afternoon, I also learnt that there were no cab companies there to take us to Peaslake and the buses only run once every 1-2 hours. Was still in high spirits though, and laughed so much while goofing around the ONE street that pretty much made up Gomshall.

It’s true that people in small towns are simply more friendly and helpful – we were in the local pub enquiring about cabs when a lady there got up and firmly said “I’ll drive you, it’ll only take me about five minutes”. Thank you Fionna from The Compassess Inn, it was much, much appreciated!

There is only one place to stay at Peaslake, which is The Hurtwood Inn Hotel.

I LOVED that hotel.. It’s so cute and cosy and warm and pretty! Got the best room (because all the cheaper ones were fully booked, haha) – front-facing and on the first floor.

View from the room – that is the ‘town centre’
P2045990.JPG_effected-002.jpg

The first day was so much fun in anticipation of the snow.

The temperature was low and the air was icy cold and crisp. Took a walk up to the forest nearby. The area is popular amongst cyclists/mountain bikers so we saw many of them there.

Found a pond and guess what! It was frozen SOLID. That got me so ridiculously excited that I jumped on and did some tap-dancing on it. I was getting more and more certain that snow was on its way.. it was only a matter of time, yessssssss.

The tap-dancing stage

At sunset, we paid the local store a visit and bought banana cake, a chocolate slice, some cheese, and a bottle of wine to keep in the room.

Walking back into the hotel.. it began to snow. I was SO HAPPY and spent the next hour in the room observing the growing whiteness outside, willing and encouraging the snowfall with my mind.

Since there wasn’t a fridge provided, the bottle was left out on the window ledge to chill.
P2046043.JPG_effected.jpg
It was my first time sleeping in a proper four-poster bed!
It was SO, so comfy and soft

Dinner was had at the hotel restaurant downstairs, which was excellent.
Had salmon fishcakes, some shredded duck.. thing (crap, I forgot.. probably because this was the most tasty thing we ordered and all I could think of was to eat it), pasta, and a roast.

Our waiter was a Polish guy called Peter, who so kindly gave us a lift back to the station the next evening – Thank you so much Peter!!

As we were having dinner…… it really began to pelt down outside. Thick flakes were furiously falling to the ground. I watched smugly through the window like a proud evil villain whose plan to take over the world was materialising.

I ate quickly, because I was dying to go out and PLAY! I could already hear kids’ voices outside.. *impatient*

Hmm I’d prefer UPside Cottage

This is the last photo of me before I slipped down the hill and fell onto the road on both my knees.
I landed so hard that I tore through my leggings AND tights underneath.
I have no regrets even though I ended up with giant swollen knees!

Snow makes everything pretty <3

So that was my snow weekend (a big WIN)

I definitely recommend Peaslake for a quick getaway from London if you want one. It’s only a 40+ min train ride from Waterloo and it has a big, beautiful forest and lots of open space.

Stay at The Hurtwood Inn Hotel (you don’t have much of a choice, but really it’s great!) from £59 per night.

This is the first follow-up to my last post

On 1 August 2011, I boarded my crappy Ryanair flight – it was the only airline that carried people from London to Carcassonne, unfortunately.

Carcassonne Airport was small. One of those where you had to step out onto the tarmac and trail your way into a tiny building to join a half-in-half-out queue to go through the ONE passport control booth.

Got a bus to the city which stopped right outside Gare de Carcassonne (SNCF train station) for about €5, where I wandered around for an hour and had my first meal of the trip: croque monsieur and a big glass of ice-cold Coke. It was BLAZING HOT. The best!

Then I was off on a train to Castelnaudary, where Blanche, the farm owner, would greet me.
Was so excited as I looked out the window as the train whizzed past vineyard after vineyard after vineyard.
The farm is called ‘Les Trois Moulins’ as the building used to be an old windmill.. by old I mean 1000 years! Now, it’s a farmhouse perched on a little hill surrounded by greenery, and there’s a stream that runs through the area.

It took a further 20 minute drive from Castelnaudary train station to get to the farm.

This is the terrace area, where everyone has food and drink together.
There are two resident cats and a beagle called Fifi.

Bernard, Blanche’s husband, used to be a chef of 30 years’ experience and so the food was always top class. Lucky me or what! :p

I had the opportunity to marvel at him in the kitchen as he prepared lunch one day.. never seen someone chop up garlic and onions that quickly before. I was truly impressed! I watched intently and listened to all the little tips he animatedly shared with me, using what little English he knew, in his thick French/German/Moroccan accent.

I learnt how to say the names of a few vegetables in French, haha.

Their home was decorated with all sorts of things that they’d collected from their travels around the world.

Particularly loved this pink princess castle hiding under some big plants by the terrace!

That top window there was my room! It overlooks the terrace.

Le petit chat – her name is Louisette – next to some freshly harvested rhubarb from the garden.
P8022393
Ok – these were THE reddest, sweetest, ripest tomatoes I have EVER tasted in my LIFE.
Drizzled with olive oil and chopped herbs (basil and.. some other stuff) and garlic.
What’s left in the photo was finished by me..

This is ‘Friga’ (not sure about the spelling, but it’s supposed to mean ‘princess’ or something similar in another language, which I forgot -_-) the resident horse.

She has been blind for several years, but is extremely intelligent.
I was taught how to approach her using my hands and voice, and how she was fed. She has no teeth left so she has a special diet of.. mushy stuff.

I couldnt help but feel sorry for her though.. imagine being a horse but not be able to run about freely or chew on grass anymore!

One of the strange flowers I encountered at the farm.

One evening, Bernard took me to the nearby village so we could have some wine at the pub. It’s the only one pub in the village. By pub, I mean it’s also a cafe, a sundry shop, and a restaurant. Imagine that! Everyone knows each other and there are no schools or cinemas or libraries or.. any other shops.

That’s the pub owner balancing an apple on his head!

My jacket is by H&M

This is Axel. He’s from Germany and lives in a caravan next door to the farm with his donkey. They’ve travelled 10,000km together! Crazy.

On my first day, Axel and I took his donkey for his daily walk. We took a short hike and arrived at a lake where we went for a swim as a respite from the heat. The water was really cold though!

This is Bernard! Always with a smile on his face, he was a real character.

He’s holding Goliath the mouse and Dino, my most loyal travel companions.

The rhubarb that was harvested was made into a delicious pie by Blanche on my last night there, where I showed off my changing-colors-heart-light and got a special present from Axel 😉

It was a wonderful night – the air was cool and there was a funny light/thunder phenomenon going on in the skies.

No one could explain it, but you’d hear sounds like thunder repetitively and see certain dim flashing in the sky simultaneously.. but no sign of any lightning after. Apparently it happens all the time there.

Everyone was smiling and talking.. and me I was extra happy from the delish dinner of wild boar (freshly killed by a neighbour!) steak..
