Dracula's Castle! This was a very unique experience hosted by the fun people at G Adventures. In this post you'll find plenty of pictures and detailed descriptions of how it went.

I've been to a few Halloween parties in my life - though not THAT many as where I grew up (Malaysia), Halloween wasn't a big deal - but the one I attended this year undoubtedly THE WINNER of the BEST LOCATION FOR A HALLOWEEN PARTY award.

This year, I got to celebrate Halloween at Bran Castle, Transylvania courtesy of G Adventures. In case you didn't know, Bran Castle is also commonly known as Dracula's Castle. Dracula a.k.a. Vlad the Impaler, who, as it turns out and funnily enough, is likely to have never set foot in the castle. In fact, Bram Stoker, author of 'Dracula', may not have even known about the castle. Read more here

BUT STILL. HALLOWEEN PARTY AT DRACULA'S CASTLE.

G Adventures currently has an exclusive agreement with Bran Castle to hold a Halloween party there on the 31st October. This means that the ONLY WAY you can celebrate Halloween at this famous national monument ON THE DAY ITSELF is via a G Adventures tour.

Of course, there are other parties organised at the castle taking place on other dates around Halloween . A quick Google search will reveal more information, but you know it's not going to be as cool as dancing with skeletons, spider webs. and fake blood on the spookiest night of the year!

The link above takes you to the 7-day trip starting and ending in Bucharest, Romania for Halloween 2019. There will also be a 3-day trip available to book soon, and this was the trip I went on.

HALLOWEEN IN TRANSYLVANIA VIA THE SPOOKMOBILE

In the 3-day 'Halloween in Transylvania' tour, we travel to Bucharest the day before, i.e. arriving on 30 October. So just in time for the party and perfect as a short break especially if you're coming from within Europe.

It was my fourth time in Bucharest and I was happy to be able to see my Romanian friends Cristina and Mihai once more. I last saw them when I visited Bucharest in May 2018 (read post: Bucharest - More Fun in the Sun!), so it was good to catch up again, albeit it was only for a brief moment in between our busy schedules.

On Halloween morning, we met everyone outside the hotel where we were staying to start our journey to Brașov, which is a beautiful city on the way up to Bran. It's the 7th biggest city in Romania.

There were some 200 people who had travelled to Romania to attend the party and everyone was excited.

This included our host/CEO (Chief Experience Officer) Stefano, who was from Italy but whose last name was the name of a French city. Stefano was very enthusiastic even though I imagined he must have done the trip before. I wondered how difficult it must be to stay enthusiastic all the time. He did a good job!

Our journey to Brașov took over 3 hours using a two private buses. G Adventures staff cleverly brought a bunch of Halloween decorations and had us all help set them up inside. I think everyone had fun stretching the wooly faux spiderwebs that spread through the entire bus. I admitted our bus did look super cool. I called it the Spookmobile

The other bus didn't have any such decorations, so we felt like our bus was the better one (it was).

BRASOV BRUSH-OFF

We stayed in Brașov over the next two nights - it was to be our base during the Halloween shenanigans. Most people opted to stay in Bran. closer to the castle, but I think Brasov was a fine option as it was such a pretty little town. It even has its own Hollywood-style sign in the hills.

After checking into our hotel which was right on the square, I went out for a walk with Agathe, a new friend I'd made in the bus. We had a nice lunch. Brașov had a lot of colourful buildings and seemed to have the kind of light that Lisbon has - a shiny, magical glow. I liked Brașov.

I told myself I'd use the spare time scheduled for the next day to wander around to take photos of the city. Now, we had to hurry back to the hotel to get ready for the Halloween party.

I had a bit of a problem. I didn't know what to wear for Halloween in Transylvania.

I love fancy dress but I am no good at looking scary. I think I'm on the opposite side of the fancy dress spectrum - I like rainbows and glitter and sequins and neon face paint. Fairy lights instead of spider webs. I don't want my skin to look deadly pale - I want it to SPARKLE!

In between my hectic travel schedule during October, I only managed to piece together this ridiculous-looking, giant headband out of leftover tulle I saved from a tutu workshop at hoop camp last summer.

Cristina had given me a bag of Halloween make-up to use, including black and white face paint, glow-in-the dark nail polish, clip-on fangs, and fake blood. There was also a can of glitter hairspray, which was the only thing I used. I'm really not a fan of looking dead..

So I don't know what I went as. I used a lot of glitter on my face and wore a dress that matched my headpiece and it was good enough for me!

A TOUR OF BRAN CASTLE - HALLOWEEN EDITION

Fourth time in Romania, and I finally make it to the famous Bran Castle / Dracula's Castle. It looked COOL. Sorry about the grainy photo. Oh and those creepy things on the ground are just mannequins, not real people.

We got there via taxi from Brasov. The ride took about 45 minutes and we were there by about 7pm.. or was it 7.30pm? My giant headpiece kept bumping against the roof of the car during the journey and it felt as though I was too tall for the car, which is rare.

At the castle entrance, we met with some of the people who had opted in to a private tour of Bran Castle as an extra on the itinerary.

The 14th century castle was dressed for Halloween much better than I was.

The castle was decorated with all the usual things you'd expect at a Halloween party - pumpkins. candles, lots of fake spiders and their webs, bats etc.

We were guided through secret staircases and tunnels - there were so many rooms the whole thing felt like a maze. I like mazes!

What's funny is doing the tour with a group of monsters, ghouls, zombies, and Adam's Family characters (mostly Wednesday Adams actually). Most people arrived wearing very creative costumes - this made me feel rather underdressed but it was good entertainment just watching other people.

Admittedly, I didn't pay too much attention to the guide, who I am sure was sharing a lot of interesting information. It's hard to concentrate with all the scary-looking people lurking around..

LIKE THIS GUY:

He was definitely the scariest person that night. THOSE EYES. He was also big and tall. Like a monster looming.

I don't actually know what character he's supposed to be, if any. I'm bad at these things - apparently there were a lot of interesting movie or TV characters represented in the Halloween crowd that night but I hardly recognised any of them. I thought they were cool anyway.

HALLOWEEN IN DRACULA'S CASTLE - PARTY PICS!

Since it was a private party with only about 200 participants, it never felt too crowded - in fact the number of people felt just right.

The party took place on the castle grounds as well as at a teahouse at the bottom of the castle. So there was a lot of walking up and down, which was tiring but also kept me warm.

It turns out we were incredibly lucky with the weather, which was mild. I was told that last year's partygoers had to endure near freezing temperatures.

At some point there was a fire show on the field outside the castle, although it was mostly just one man practising fire-spitting. At least that's what I saw from behind a wall of other people's shoulders.

THE TEAHOUSE IS WHERE IT'S AT

Even though dancing under the stars surrounded by the walls of a centuries-old fortress was extremely cool, I ended up enjoying myself a lot more down at the teahouse!

The music was a lot more fun (remember I hate hip-hop) and that's where I found the kookiest, quirkiest people who danced crazy with me, including Stefano, our G Adventures host. He has a hilarious photo of us on his phone I need to get a copy of.

I danced so hard that I was dripping with sweat. The next day, my legs ached. I blame the Romanian folk music they played at the end of the night! It was too funny.

OH and special thanks to Chris from the G Adventures team for being such an awesome dance partner - I hope we cross paths again; perhaps on another dancefloor.

In between dancing, we went up to the castle to watch the costume competition/showcase. Stefano tried to enter me but really, me participating would've been rude to the other contestants who had put in so much effort! Anyhow it was a lively atmosphere and worth the climb back up.

They was an official photographer on-site taking photos of people - apparently you could keep a printed copy of your photo if it found its way back to you. Mine did not find its way to me.

A REVELATION ABOUT MY COSTUME

When I was using the bathroom, I exited the stall and there were two women washing their hands at the sink.

They looked at my tulle headpiece.. then one of them exclaimed..

"Are you a GIFT???"

Why.. yes. Yes I am!!

Isn't she a genius? I wish I'd thought of this earlier in the evening so I could act like I had it all planned.

IS IT WORTH CELEBRATING HALLOWEEN IN TRANSYLVANIA?

In short: Yes.

In not-so-short:

In terms of the venue, I can't think of a better place to celebrate Halloween. I mean it's Dracula's Castle (even if there's no real connection between the castle and Dracula, haha).

How much more Halloweeny can you get than that? I definitely felt like I won at Halloween - next time I just need a better costume, perhaps with the help of a Halloween Costume Consultant. Is there such a person?

And don't forget - the only way you can join a Halloween party AT BRAN CASTLE on Halloween night itself is via G Adventures.

The 7-day trip would include visits to other towns and places of interest in Romania, such as Sibiu and Sighisoara, and you'll get to experience more of the local culture.

The 3-day trip, which I was on, largely focuses on the Halloween party but there is some spare time to explore Bucharest, Brasov and/or Bran as well.

This post was created in collaboration with G Adventures, who sponsored my participation in this unique experience!

This is a post about my experience there and of course, it's also packed with fun, colourful photos!

HAMBURG ON TOUR IN LONDON

Last weekend, the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane was made a lot more fun and colourful because..

I was there!

Haha but more importantly, I was there to attend Hamburg On Tour, which was in its second year running in London. Hamburg On Tour is a FREE festival showcasing local products from Hamburg including food, drinks, music.. and even a few Hamburgers loitering around.

(Wondering about Hamburgers and Hamburg? My last post explains it.)

It felt especially nice for me to be there after having visited Hamburg for the first time earlier in August! I felt like I knew everything about the city, although obviously I didn't.

But in my mind I felt proud for knowing, for example, that inflatable arm floats were invented in Hamburg.

STREET ART & SAILORS

I don't know how many exactly were flown in for the event, but there were a good number of big sailor figurines - a symbol of Hamburg as a port city and its maritime history - scattered around and outside the Truman Brewery, stretching out to Dray Walk too!

The sailors all had their own names - as seen on their hats! In the photo above I am flanked by Jan and Simon. They had extra-small hips and extra-large feet.

There was also a fun yellow mural specially commissioned to advertise the free festival, and signs on the ground to direct people to it.

HANGING OUT IN THE SUN

We were so so lucky with the weather! The sun shone bright and proud on both the Saturday and Sunday when the event took place. Either that or it simply loves Hamburg ;)

The festival extended into a little open space at the back where people could lounge around or enjoy a game of foosball or VR cycling. I tried the cycling and it didn't work out well - the seat was too high/my legs were too short. Also, when it was my turn the sensor was misplaced so I ended up cycling sideways through the 'countryside' the whole way!

I also tried the free currywurst samples being given out at the bar and that worked out better.

FREE FOOD & THINGS

I think a lot of people were attracted by the free food being served at Hamburg On Tour. I was one of them.

They served three different 'main meal' options and there was also the most refreshingly delicious dessert of red fruits/jam in a cup topped with smooth vanilla cream. That was my favourite.

There was labskaus (second photo), which is a traditional dish from Hamburg consisting of a beetroot mash, pickles, onions, herring, and bits of beef. Oh and an egg. I loved everything about this dish except the herring, which was cooked! I think herring tastes better raw.

Around the venue there was also free coffee. This obviously attracted a lot of coffee addicts. I was not one of them. Coffee makes me feel sick. There were regular gin and beer tastings throughout the day, samples of high-quality chocolate, and.. organic tea/juices.

Since I also do not drink tea and am not a fan of chocolate, the gin was my favourite free thing to taste. It was very good gin!

There was also a cute Hamburg merchandise table, where you could take something home in exchange for a donation in an amount of your choice.

LIVE MUSIC & THE BEATLES

Of COURSE, the festival had to have a Beatles feature. The Beatles having had their crucial beginnings in Hamburg was clearly something that the city was very proud of.

Stefanie Hempel has been running her infamous Beatles Tour in Hamburg for something like decades?? I can't remember exactly, but it must have been something like 17 years! A true Beatles enthusiast.

She entertained us with a few live performances of a variety of Beatles classics throughout the day. My favourite part was when they moved the couch out onto the street to sing for the crowds outside.

So much fun!

^This was the best photo I got of Willy Man.. an over-enthusiastic stranger who kept jumping in to join the hip hop dance performance group (from Hamburg) doing their thing on the street!

HAMBURG ON TOUR IN COLOUR

Being able to experience the event with fellow blogger Janet Newenham made it all the more fun! I'd been wanting to meet her for a while and it was a lucky coincidence that we were covering the same event.

It was nice to see so many people so excited about one not-so-little city. I thought it was a great event that gave people a glimpse of Hamburg lifestyle.. and not just because of the free food.

I loved the art they put on the walls outside.. made using coloured tape!

DID HAMBURGERS ORIGINATE IN HAMBURG?

I'll start off by addressing something that I'm pretty sure has come across your mind when you think of Hamburg: is that where hamburgers were invented?

The answer is yes.. and no.

First thing: a person from Hamburg is in fact.. called.. a Hamburger! I know.. I laughed too..

The sandwich itself was not invented in Hamburg, but during the 19th century there came to be something called the 'Hamburg Steak', which was when beef from Hamburg cows was minced and combined with salt and onions, then formed into patties. It was usually served raw or lightly cooked, without any bread or buns.

The Hamburg Steak became a popular item in restaurants at the port of New York, brought there by German emigrants. Its evolution into a sandwich started here, although it is less clear and its exact origins possibly controversial.

I always thought it was a joke that hamburgers came from Hamburg, but now I know there is some truth in it!

WHAT IS HAMBURG?

Hamburg is the second-largest city in Germany! Did you know that? I always thought that Munich was bigger... which, as it turns out, is something Hamburgers hate to hear. :-o

Since I'm always honest, I'll say that I had a pretty bland picture of Hamburg before I visited. I imagined it to be quite grey and dull, and always cold.

I'm pretty sure I just got lucky, but during my long weekend there the sun shone bright and warm every day.

Hamburg is also one of the greenest cities in Europe, with about 14% of its area made up of green spaces. So I did see a lot of greenery while I was there (last week) - it's great to travel in summer. Try to visit in summer if you can!

This is a shocker (to me at least): Hamburg has over 2300 bridges! That's more than any other city in the world.

Last fun fact: Montblanc pens were born in Hamburg! I assumed they were French :p

MS DOCKVILLE 2018

The main item on the agenda was to attend MS Dockville music festival. We went on the Friday and Saturday.

I was really excited to find out that Megan and Scott (hyperlapse experts who blog at Bobo & Chichi) were on the same trip and would be coming to the festival as well! I had been wanting to meet them forever.

And for good reason, too - they were totally on the same kooky planet as I was. We silly-danced and laughed a LOT!

*Megan and me! Thanks Bobo & Chichi for pics

My fun pink playsuit is by Humphries & Begg.

The festival grounds were not huge; there were two large stages including the main stage, and a handful of smaller ones.

Fancy dress wasn't really a theme, so I was a little bummed about that but because I had such good company, I had a fun time overall.

The only act I recognised (and that I saw) was Bonobo; but that's because I'm not too familiar with popular artists these days (my taste in music is too quirky).

Food and toilets were average, with the the usual long lines you'd expect for such an event. The festival site had a kind of industrial feel to it. It was packed and clearly a popular event with the locals.

There were a few art installations and even light shows/light projections on buildings on the other side of the river.. the latter of which we sadly missed (but saw photos after the festival was over).

My favourite was (of course) the rainbow tunnel and a kind of tower of colourful blocks.

I brought a few packets of glitter gel by Projekt Glitter and they went down a treat!

I travel with glitter all the time now. It's such an easy way add some literal sparkle into your day.

If only sparkle came with extra energy, because by the middle of the second night, we were all so exhausted that we decided to go home before one of the headliners (Alt-J?) came on.

It had been a longgggg day - we'd overexerted ourselves by having gone canoeing that morning.

CANOEING IN WINTERHUDE

I LOOOOVE festivals but in Hamburg, the canoeing activity was my favourite thing that we did, and a definite highlight of the trip.

Before visiting, I didn't know much about the makeup and textures of the city. So I had no idea that there were so many canals snaking around.

On a sunny Saturday morning, we were taken to the neighbourhood of Winterhude to do a bit of canoeing. That 'bit of canoeing' turned out to be 'a lot of canoeing'.

A lot of people like to do a lot of canoeing in Winterhude - we passed many of them and tried greeting them with an enthusiastic German 'Hallo' whenever we had the opportunity (and courage) to do so.

Saying 'hallo' is really amusing and entertaining when you're used to the less drawn out English 'hello'.

Anyway, Winterhude is BEAUTIFUL! The canals were BEAUTIFUL! I was reminded of Hampstead in London.. or Regents Canal near the zoo.

There were big fancy houses with direct access to the canals via their backyards. Some parts were rich with low hanging foliage which made our floating journey feel magical and romantic.

Jessi, our Hamburger host, mentioned that Winterhude was unfortunately not that well connected when it came to public transport, hence she rarely visited, and that it was a pity because each time she does make it over, she loves it.

MINIATUR WUNDERLAND

It seems that no trip to Hamburg is complete without at least a quick visit to Miniatur Wunderland, the world's largest model railway exhibition.

At first I wasn't too interested to go. If it weren't for Megan and Scott, I would've probably given it a miss.

BUT, we made it there and.. wow. There were so many miniature cities and villages and things. With really tiny people! I saw a lot of impressive models of Italian places, such as Venice and Cinque Terre (pictured above). It was all very creative and impressive!

The lighting was constantly fading in and out to alternate between a daytime and nighttime environment. There was even a miniature airport with a runway and little planes that took off and landed on it, complete with sound effects.

We entertained ourselves further by trying to spot tiny people doing naughty things, with or without clothing. We found a few instances of hanky panky going on, but not nearly as many as we had envisioned.

I was soon tired of seeing miniature things. There were just SO MANY. After a while, it felt repetitive. I'm still glad I went and saw it though - I'd never seen anything like it before.

Ticket prices for Miniatur Wunderland are currently €15 each (adult).

ST PAULI STREET ART TOUR

We stayed in the neighbourhood of St Pauli (St Pauli Quarter), which is bit grungy and known for its abundance of street art/graffiti. They could be seen everywhere!

A short walking tour of the area revealed some of the more prominent artists/pieces. They were mostly quite messy and crazy. I guess it would be a lot more exciting to a graffiti enthusiast.. which I am sadly not!

WHERE TO STAY IN HAMBURG

As I mentioned above, we stayed in the area of St Pauli, at Superbude St Pauli, which is a hostel/hotel which is modern, bright, stylish, and slightly quirky.

On first impression it seemed to be a place that mainly catered to teenagers and young adults, but we saw many older people and families staying there that weekend.

I really liked the location, too. The surrounding area was lively and had a buzzing restaurant and bar scene.

WHAT I ATE IN HAMBURG

In our short time, we really only got to dine at two restaurants in Hamburg, both of which exceeded my expectations (for some reason, I didn't have high hopes :p).

Hatari The Corner in St Pauli was where I had a really juicy burger that came with a poached egg, and the most delicious roasted potatoes on the side. The burger was huge and it was sloppy. Which I liked. It made for a really enjoyable meal!

We also had pizza at Pizza Social Club, topped with the creamiest burrata cheese. For starters we were treated to a good variety of high-quality cold meats including bresaola, one of my favourites.

On my last day, I ventured out for a solo lunch at Ban Canteen, which offered Vietnamese street food in a hipster style setting. Although the dishes were made for the European palate, it was still pretty tasty and a good effort.

MORE FUN WITH FRIENDS

My experience in Hamburg was made a lot more colourful because I was lucky enough to have Megan and Scott (of Bobo & Chichi) around to explore with.

I would recommend visiting Hamburg (and anywhere else in the universe) with someone who brings out your fun side and encourages you to be more adventurous and curious! Someone you can crab-walk on the sidewalk with, or someone who will take your picture (multiple times) when you get shat on by a pigeon.

However, if you cannot find a suitably silly friend, I would say Hamburg is a great (and safe) city for a solo trip, too ;)

Here's a fun little video produced by Bobo & Chichi based on our silly antics!

Fun in Salzburg: Beer & Dirndls! https://www.smallcrazy.com/fun-in-salzburg-beer-dirndls/ https://www.smallcrazy.com/fun-in-salzburg-beer-dirndls/#comments Sat, 21 Jul 2018 00:48:26 +0000 https://www.smallcrazy.com/?p=5888 What I did in Salzburg this May: Drank too much beer, made my own beer, squeezed into a tight dirndl and partied in it, tried an e-bike, and watched the raising of the Maypole!

The post Fun in Salzburg: Beer & Dirndls! appeared first on SMALLCRAZY.

]]>

This is a rundown of three activity-filled days spent in Salzburg on a beer-themed trip organised by the local tourism board in May. A.K.A How to have fun in Salzburg!

I've been to Salzburg twice before, but always only for a fleeting day or so, en route to (or coming back from) the beautiful mountains of Austria. I didn't remember much other than visiting Mozart's house and doing a Sound of Music tour!

We were super fortunate with the weather, which was warm and sunny, and really too good for the start of May.

BEAUTIFUL IN SPRING

I spent the first day walking around the city and along the river. I didn't really know where I was going, but Salzburg isn't big and I'm not that ambitious a walker.

The whole place seemed to be glowing in the sun. It was pretty and almost.. heavenly? This seemed the most apparent at the famous Mirabell Gardens, where I stopped to relax and take a few photos.

This is where you can find those steps where part of the Do-Re-Mi song was filmed in The Sound of Music movie. Now, you'll often find crowds of tourists trying to get a photo on one of the steps.

I felt a bit nostalgic being there. I thought of when my mom and I ran through the tunnel (like Maria did), laughing all the way. My mom is a huge fan of The Sound of Music and that was one of the reasons I brought her to Salzburg last time. She loved it!

AN E-BIKE TOUR!

Have you been on an e-bike before? This was my first time and it was a REVELATION!

Ricardo loves cycling - he's constantly trying to get me on the bike at home. But I usually crush his hopes with my two main excuses:

"I hate cycling in in the city"
"There are too many hills here!"

Well with an E-BIKE, cycling was a complete breeze! It's like, not even cycling. It gave me the boost I needed to feel more confident in urban areas (and like a hero on empty/countryside paths).

We started the tour in the city in Mozartplatz Square, where we picked up the bikes. I was happy to know that we were going to cycle straight OUT of town!

Within 5-10 minutes, the scenery had completely changed. We were soon on a path flanked by green grass on each side and mountains in the distance.

I wanted to stop SO MANY TIMES (so many beautiful spots!) but as per group tour etiquette that was a bit difficult. I did almost get left behind a couple of times because I took too long taking pictures somewhere.

My favourite part was cycling along Hellbrunner Allee - a long (5km), straight road lined with tall chestnut trees. It was along this road that Maria had danced and sang 'I Am Confident' and entered into the grounds of the Von Trapp mansion - in real life known as Schloss Frohnburg (Frohnburg Castle) It's the yellow building seen in the photo above.

Hellbrunner Allee connects to Hellbrunn Castle and its gardens, so that's where we ended up next. Again, it's a popular spot for Sound of Music fans as this is where the famous gazebo is now located!

I have to note that I loooooved this part of the trip the most - it was so exhilarating to be speeding through the beautiful countryside with so little effort! Haha

KALTENHAUSEN BREWERY

Our bike tour ended at Kaltenhausen Brewery - Austria's oldest brewery. It's been around since 1475!

We were treated to a whole variety of beer to taste - from traditional recipes to more innovative, specialty beers. I couldn't finish all of it.. I'm not a great beer drinker (I'm very slow). I generally prefer dark beers and I remember they had a really good one.

I couldn't decide what filled me up more - all the ham and cheese or all that beer!

Still, I had a sweet tooth and asked for an apple strudel after. That was my favourite part :p

AUGUSTINER BREWERY

Another day, another brewery!

This time it was Augustiner Brewery (or Augustiner Bräu - not to be confused with the one in Munich), which seemed to be a popular beer hangout as they had a huge outdoor seating area. They also served a variety of snack food to go with the very large mugs of beer they served.

The spiced sausage things (sausage cake??) were really good.

Fun fact: the building used to be a monastery, and the monks who lived there began brewing beer in 1621!

MAKING MY OWN BEER!

Our trip included a beer brewing experience at Bierkulturhaus, which is a kind of.. beer academy.

I can't say I'm super interested in brewing any of my own beer in future, so I've easily forgotten everything they tried to teach us here. But what's important is that I remember I had fun doing it!

Oh yeah and.. undeveloped beer smells a bit like Marmite

Also they had a cool toy/game downstairs, which was a strong magnetic stick and a bunch of bottle caps you can throw at it!

LEDERHOSENDONNERSTAG

I'm just going to quote the information that was given to us to describe #lederhosendonnerstag as it is straight to the point:

In 2013, two guys started encouraging people to wear their Lederhosen (or Dirndl) not just for baptisms and for the Festival. The picked Thursday randomly and the project spread through word-of-mouth. Every Thursday, men dress in Lederhosen and combine them with Chucks and business shirts. No rules. Once a month, everybody gets together for an after-work-clubbing with live DJs and everybody dresses in their Lederhosen or Dirndl.

Doesn't it sound like a super fun event!! I looked forward to this evening the most.

We had our attire rented locally in Salzburg and we were ready to go on Saturday evening - Saturday because Salzburg had advanced in some football tournament and the usual Thursday was a no-go, haha.

Our experience was supplemented with lessons on how to play the alpine horn.. and also how to yodel.

With the alpine horn.. I think we all just made a lot of fart noises with our mouths. I think the key to playing the horn well is to be able to make the most well-controlled fart sounds with your mouth. I could be wrong. But I sure was a lousy alpine horn.. artist? haha

Yodelling was less challenging but so hilarious. We all laughed a lot and I think found the whole thing amusing and a lot of fun. I have not practised my yodel since leaving the party, however.

^With Christine, who was so great to party with!

The party was set outdoors and I was really entertained by the sight of so many people in traditional clothes and dancing to hip hop/whatever that's popular these days.

It was good to dance - all that beer made it easy for me to tolerate the music (hahaha).

In fact I had so much fun that I was sad when we had to leave!

RAISING THE MAYPOLE

Since it was early May, we were lucky to be able to attend the raising of the Maypole festivities taking place at Stiegl Brewery. Basically another reason to drink yet even more beer!

I'd never witnessed such an event before and it didn't occur to me that it literally meant raising a giant, wooden pole upright from the ground. Using a series of sticks of varying lengths. It took a few hours.

The place was packed with people and their families. I think everyone was extra happy as it was a sunny day too.

TWO MORE THINGS I LOVE

THIS VIEW!

You can find it by using the Mönchsberg lift that takes you up (60m in 30 seconds!) to a popular lookout terrace. Just look it up on Google Maps.

ICEZEIT ICE CREAM BAR

The weather was so hot that this place really saved me. Also, the staff were so friendly and nice that I got free ice cream when they noticed I kept coming back!

AKA

How to Have Too Much Fun / Embarrass Yourself / Go Crazy at a Festival

wildernessfestival

This is way overdue, but BANG here’s my post about my time at Wilderness Festival 2013, held last August in beautiful Charlbury near the Cotswolds. It was a rather last-moment decision to attend (like many of my big life decisions..) and omg it was THE best decision ever! SO here are about 50 photos and some accompanying text in an attempt to best share with you my experience at what I frequently describe to my friends as ‘The Best Festival Ever’ 🙂

The THING about Wilderness is that.. it’s not just a music festival. I like to say that it’s a festival that celebrates LIFE! Because there’s so much to see and to. It’s full of stimulating activities and experiences which enrich your life.

There’s fantastic FOOD, art, beautiful people, poetry readings, dance classes, cricket, circus shows, fire twirlers, wild swimming, archery, crafts, hula hooping, a BUBBLE STAND, night-time raves in the forest, lanterns, fancy dress, face painting, books hanging from trees which you can take and read, a SPA, science lessons, horse-riding, cooking classes, speed dating… there’s just SO MUCH that I get overwhelmed and excited just trying to recollect it all! Just imagine ALL THIS set upon rolling green hills and big beautiful trees..

campsite

I borrowed a Cath Kidston tent from my dear friend Hannah – and set it up ALL TO MYSELF. If there’s one festival camping tip I can divulge it’s HAVE YOUR OWN TENT. Having the space and privacy is amazing! Also I get to lay around naked without a care then the sun gets in and tries to burn me alive during the late mornings.

malaysia flag

There were three of us in the group who were originally from Malaysia one of the girls actually brought a Malaysian flag to the festival! We were wondering if there were any other people there who were from Malaysia as well.. we concluded: probably not. They set up the flag at our campsite. How cute!

FOOD

2013 headlined by Polpo, Hix, and Ottolenghi – i.e. they catered the nightly banquets.

There was also food by Moro, St John, and J. Sheekey.

foodstalls

I had most fun eating throughout the day from the many stalls that served the festival all day! I have to say, it was rather refreshing not to see the usual crappy kebabs and other junk food that you’d usually find at other music festivals :p

foodsign pulledpork

^pulled pork meal

cheeseburger

^freakin’ awesome cheeseburger.. drooling right now. RIGHT NOW.

saltbeef

^salt beef on fries topped with cheese

edible flowers

^edible flowers

Yeah, EDIBLE FLOWERS. From one of those health food thingies. Of course I had to at least try it, so up to the counter I went and collected my free cup of.. flowers and other plants. There was some kind of dressing drizzled on top but you know what? IT SUCKS. That’s the truth. So dry and.. tasteless..hmm.

Eating that enriched my life in terms of introducing to me what it’s like to be a wild grazing herbivore (one tick off the life-experience list!), but nothing more..

teatime bus

^a little teatime section complete with big red London bus!

moro

^Having breakfast at the Moro tent

There were lots of haystacks to lounge on.. isn’t that so hipster cool? Hahaha

SUNSHINE / PLAYTIME

We were SO lucky. The sun LOVED us and showed itself all through the festival! Needless to say everyone was in a great mood. It was truly a festival full of love (fuelled and encouraged by sunshine).

field of people

During the day, people would just laze around on the grass. You’d never get bored because there’d be so many quirky people to watch. Art to see. Books to read. Music to listen to. Games to play. You just can’t be bored.

grass time

We were happy just to BE on the grass!

us three

^Linda, Me, Aishah

i love sun

We’d spend ages on this particular hill near the lake, soaking it up. Every day.

lakeside

It was one of the quieter areas. I thought of rolling down the hill, but fortunately I had enough brains to restrain myself for fear of rolling all the way into the cold water.

SO, I went to a water-free zone to do my rolling and land-hugging instead:

crazy1 crazy2

^dry swimming here.

crazy3 crazy4

My friends were so embarrassed that they stayed away and used the camera to document my actions instead.

I did all sorts of rolls – forwards, backwards, sideways.
I was SO HIGH ON SUNSHINE. HIGH ON LIFE. I couldn’t stop!

I started talking to random people passing by, trying to persuade them to join me on the ground.
I crawled around like an animal. I felt like an animal. I slithered around like a worm.

It was one of the funniest/happies afternoons I’d ever had. You know when you can just LET GO and not CARE what anyone in the world thinks (they think I’m crazy).

But hey, look at these cool chicks:

biting friends

Aishah later indulged in my madness (how could you resist really) and then got bitten by me.

bee cause

^I also met a bee! And look how our colours match.

I’m wearing: Top from Malaysia // F21 shorts // Saltwater sandals

confetti

I thought it was a good idea to collect pieces of confetti from the ground in an attempt to recycle/re-throw them.

I thought wrong. Don’t try this. It’s not worth the effort.

huggg

^Yeah I know you can see a little something orange but it’s just a spot of my bikini, ok?

My dress was designed/made by Joyce. Shoes are Converse. Headband from Topshop.

FESTIVAL STUFF

breakfast

We would pass this little breakfast section every morning when walking to the main festival grounds from our campsite (there are more unpictured).

Lots of great food to choose from AND free Innocent smoothies on your way out.

The camping facilities were all great – clean and sufficient to meet demand.

hulahoop

A hula hooping area! Too bad it seemed to be only for kids.
I for one happen to be pretty good at the hoop. Haha!

drawing drawing 2

^Group/cooperative art to get your creative brain working!

craft area

You can also make your own festival headpiece using REAL LEAVES AND VINES AND FLOWERS! Nature! YES! No plasticky, gimmicky stuff! Hehe

wishing tree

Write your deepest wishes on a paper leaf and pin it unto The Wishing Tree! Or be really nosey and read what other people wrote (I chose this option).

lesbian love stories

^One of the random books you can find around the festival. Free for you to read! And full of love <3

boat swing

^Happy swings for the kids!

Oh and then there was this weirdo playing guitar with a beatbox and singing weird stuff. And mad girls dancing. I loved it:

SUNSET / NIGHTTIME

A magnificent sunset presented above us every evening. Wait maybe I missed one evening. Not too sure there.

The headliners in terms of music included Empire of the Sun, Noah and the Whale, Rodriguez, and Tom Odell. I loved the first two most!

festival sunset kigu pals

We decided it was most comfortable and warm to roam around after dark wearing our animal onesies from Kigu.co.uk.

bubble man
^The Bubbles Inc Stand

OMG this was one of my favourites ever! It just blows bubbles ALLL DAY AND ALL NIGHT LONG. Small ones, big ones, smoke filled ones, etc.

Here’s a clip of the quirky umbrella dude spinning bubbles:

flying trapeze

There was a nightly flying trapeze theatre/dance thingy going on.. it was amazing!! I forget the name of the company which runs it.

Oh and here’s a clip of Empire of the Sun performing one of their biggest hits, Walking on a Dream:

Making our way into the valley in the forest every night was an adventure in itself. You’d see scores of people in their crazy impressive fancy dress/costumes.. some draped in LED lights or smothered in paint and glitter. Lanterns and flags and other lights adorned the trees. A whole variety of music coming from different sources. People dancing. People rolling around on the ground (see? i totally belong).

You could feel a definite ENERGY. PARTY ENERGY! Haha.

green party

Then you’d past certain areas, like the green one above, where people would be chilling out or milling about as others weaved between them, heading towards the parties. Somewhat like a pre-party drinking area.. I suppose.

forest rave forest rave 2

^There are two pics of the same scene cos I couldn’t decide which coloured light was better? Haha

Who knew that partying at in the forest could be SO FREAKIN’ AWESOME? Well the festival organisers knew but anyway.

I was outta control! The music was so good! I ran up and down the hills. I jumped around till my knees hurt. We brought a shitload of glow sticks with us and shared them with strangers – who then became our dancing friends of course. I smiled till my face hurt.

And.. No festival is complete without a pair of Prizmeyez diffraction glasses! I take mine with me everywhere. EVERYWHERE.

prizmeyez

On the last night, I decided I wanted to party the entire night until I was absolutely pooped. I ended up at some after-party somewhere. I shared a bonfire with some randoms. I made some new friends. We laid on the ground together atop a hill and watched the stars glow in the night sky above. We hugged. We rolled on the ground. We talked about serious things. Ridiculous things. About food.

Soon, I felt the sun starting to rise and I thought, ‘ok, time to locate my tent’.

It was a long walk across the festival grounds. BUT SO BEAUTIFUL! Everything was shut and empty; void of people.

I realised I had my camera with me. Why not use it, right?

I took some pictures of the festival emptiness. It was rather surreal.

Then I took a picture of my face.

festival face

I came across some haystacks under one of my favourite trees that I’d lay on to watch the fairy lights above the previous nights.

‘I’m coming!’, I said to the haystack, as I set the camera on self-timer.

haystack
^Result!

I also took this..

wilderness lion

And then I made this video..

HOW did I think that it was a good idea to roll UP a hill???

All I know is.. if I was happy enough to have done that AND recorded it, it must’ve been a damn good night.

THANK YOU WILDERNESS FESTIVAL FOR A MOST SPECTACULAR WEEKEND!
See you again this summer. And you guys, get your tickets HERE

Oh yeah, thought I’d share this little comparison chart I saw in the papers following the festival, hehe:

Apologies for the loooong interval between writing about what happened in Rotterdam and my getting to Canada to attend my first ever TBEX Conference. And actually I’m now not even writing about the manic, stressful way in which I got there, but rather.. about this lovely house I got to stay in and the fab new friends I made as a result!
toronto from aboveIt was my first time visiting Canada. Took this pic as the the plane was getting ready for landing. How GREEN, right? It’s like.. a garden of little broccoli tops.blue skies
^This was taken a bit earlier. I love it because it captures pretty much the full gradient of the sky from top to bottom.

I was so excited to be crossing the Atlantic again. I’d only been once before – in 2007 when I spent three weeks in wonderful San Francisco. Really I was just so RELIEVED that I was actually ON that flight at all, having received my visa only 12 hours prior… so much drama.

A big THANK YOU to WeHostels again for the opportunity. And also thank you my lucky stars that this all ended up happening..

You see, the reason I even knew about the comp was because of a bouncy, happy, pink-loving, jetsetting girl called LOLA. We’d been internet-friends (is that a term) since earlier in the year – drawn together by our similar personalities: positive, optimistic, and FUN-LOVING. She encouraged me to enter the comp so we might have a chance to meet in Toronto.

“I’m gonna enter it, win it, and see you there!”

And I did! I couldn’t wait to meet her!

hot dog hot dog 2

One of the first things I did upon arriving in Toronto was get a cheap eat from a hot dog stand.. I love that shit. ‘Street meat’, they call it.. hmm. Totally unglam. But for $1.50, fine. Haha! (Thank you Karla)

As soon as Lola heard I was coming, she arranged a place for me to stay: a room in an awesome four-storey townhouse on Bleecker Street (somewhere north-east of downtown Toronto). With a bunch of other travel bloggers. We nicknamed it the ‘Real World TBEX’ house, complete with our own hashtag (#RWTBEX). Social media geeks….. …

bay window
^Bay window in the top floor room, where I slept. It was a massive room that took up the whole floor. It had two queen beds and its own toilet.

The house was organised and provided by Flipkey, a holiday rental service not unlike Airbnb (the one I use most). I’ve been discovering more and more of such websites lately.. I should make a list soon as it’s such a fantastic alternative to hotels! And then there are higher-end options as well, such as renting luxury villas, amongst others.. these I’ll save for when I make more money 🙂

^Crossroads and tram tracks at the south end of Bleecker Street.

I sent Lola a link to the Build A Dream ‘Snack Shack’ a couple of weeks before the trip. Of course, that crazy mofo (I mean that in the most lovable, endearing sense) only went and BOUGHT IT. I think it was the knowledge of this fact that fuelled my determination in getting that visa and making sure I got my ass over there..

I mean.. A CARDBOARD PLAYHOUSE WHAT MORE COULD I WANT REALLY??
This woman KNEW ME before she even MET ME!

It wasn’t long before it was set up.. do you see all the bottles on the countertop? That’s how sturdy that thing was. Build A Dream Playhouses – not just for kids for sure! We turned ours into a bar, pretty much. And named it The Confessional (it wasn’t me – I just provided the toys and props, obviously).

Above pic is of Chris of Captain and Clark, and me in clearly the best hat ever.

The following pics are an accumulation of about three occasions of mucking around the house/’snack shack’:

^Right: Ted on the guitar. I decided to give him a kind of mohawk..

Ted was so drunk when he brought his guitar out and attempted to serenade us. I don’t even know WHAT he played.. or if it was even anything that was really music at all. Poor him, he kept saying that he didn’t normally sound like that. The next morning when he was sober, he sported the guitar again to show us that he REALLY COULD play and sing. Awh, it’s not like we didn’t believe you the first time! Haha 😉

Now THAT is a moustache.. I have a particular friend in London *ahem* who keeps pointing out the tiny little baby hairs on my upper lip and making me conscious about it. So conscious that I actually looked up and considered laser hair removal (see, I even found a clinic near me!) for a while.

These stick-on moustaches were rather reassuring.

Lola brought a bunch of merit badges for us to assign to each other. We had a ballot box and everything! I can’t remember which one I got.. but I know I swapped it for one that depicted a shoe with a piece of gum stuck to it. It just looked funny and I felt it represented me rather well.. haha.

new confessional deejisms

As you can see, The Confessional never stopped evolving! More and more dumb doodles started to adorn its exterior… (by yours truly..), and it even boasted a bed sheet roof. It was a bar. It was a glowstick-shop. It also smelt of Chris after a while cos he just WOULD NOT GET OUT OF IT.

Here’s a video I put together – it’s basically just all the Vines I took at the house..

From the video, you’ll notice a couple of things:

1. Flat Deej
I was confused about what ‘Flat Deej’ was at first. Let me explain to you my non-American readers.. First of all, Deej is actually a blogger. He was meant to come to TBEX but for some reason couldn’t, and was really bummed about it. So Lola created Flat Deej to make him feel like he was there. It’s based on the award-winning Flat Stanley Project, in which school children are encouraged to write letters to their friends documenting the whereabouts/activities of a cut-out paper character called Stanley (from a storybook called Flat Stanley).

2. Banana
Actually I just wanted to explain Flat Deej and nothing else.

rwtbex crew
^Our one group photo! Thanks Alex for this 🙂

I admit I hardly attended any sessions at the conference due to late nights etc – because this bunch were so much FUN to hang out with. It was the first time meeting each other for most of us. In fact I hadn’t even heard of half these people before I got there. But it was the best thing ever..

There’s something so amazing about meeting people who also LOVE to travel! I’d never met so many people who were entirely immersed and so passionate about exploring the world before. It was like MAGIC! Kinda like a special, natural connection. Everyone was so POSITIVE, receptive, EXPRESSIVE, encouraging, and socially adventurous. It was super awesome that I didn’t need to explain (unlike when I meet erm, ‘normal’ people.. for lack of a better word, please, it’s 2am..) my desire to travel and and make it my life’s priority – cos everyone shared that same desire. AUTOMATIC FRIENDS.

SO, at the house, there was:

Craig of StayAdventurous
Craig loves being on the road and his favourite country appears to be Mexico! He’s full of shit and will encourage you to step out of your comfort zone. See the world! STAY ADVENTUROUS! And maybe you’ll end up in his imaginary (but one day hopefully real) Hall of Fame..

Erin of The World Wanderer
Erin is a sweetie who has an immense love for the Vine app, and poutine. She’s a teacher and travels as much as she can during the school holidays. Really she’s just so lovely that I can’t even call her a ***** for having so many days off in a year.

Chris & Tawny of Captain and Clark
Erm, only the most awesome couple ever! ‘Met on Kilimanjaro; Engaged at the Taj Mahal’. They’re both hilarious and witty and make fab videos. Why can’t I speak as naturally and smoothly as them on camera? Ugh anyway. Adventurous, energetic, and fun.. if we lived in the same country they’d be my best friends for sure!

Alex of CrazySexyFunTraveler
I truly admire Alex for her dedication and commitment to her cause. She’s been travelling full time for a few years now and she looks like she should be on a magazine cover! She’s so down-to-earth, helpful, and I love her honesty. She’s outgoing and adventurous.. and of course, a little crazy. My kinda friend!

Gerard & Kieu of GQTrippin
Why are some couples just so cute? WHY? Recently (or not so recently) back from a year-long round-the-world trip, G & Q are now settling back to life in California.. or trying to I suppose. Haha. They are both SO NICE I wish I could shrink and squash them into a little ball, which I then toss to the ground, releasing them into full-sized human existence….. yes like Pokemon..

Ted of Traveling Ted
Ted’s passion is everything outdoors and adventure travel. He’s a camping expert (who packed some sort of miniature/foldable SHOVEL in his backpack.. haha) and of course, he plays the guitar. I would LOVE to go on a trip with him and do some crazy stuff! TED let’s go sea kayaking! Caving! Skiing! Snowboarding! Canyoning! Everything!

Carolyn of The Lazy Travelers
There’s only ONE pic of this girl in this post.. and it’s of the back of her head. Other times she was probably passed out somewhere whilst the rest of us smiled for the camera! She’s one-half of The Lazy Travelers.. ‘The Wino’
Then of course there’s Lola.. I love her. That is all.

thanks flipkey

THANKS FLIPKEY for housing us!

Hi friends, I’m still alive! I’ve had such a crazy three weeks that I haven’t had the chance to sit down with my laptop until TODAY. In summary, I went to Rotterdam and had the most fabulous time.. and then my entire suitcase, including my passport, was stolen from a train. Because of that, I nearly missed my trip to Toronto – and did I tell you my Canadian visa application was REJECTED? – the following week. Remember that post I wrote about the most interesting person I met while travelling? It was an entry to a little competition and I won it!. But I made it. Barely. And it was AMAZING. Now I’m back and trying to adjust to London life again..
OK let’s start from the beginning. Three weeks ago, I left work early and boarded a flight to Rotterdam to attend TBU Europe, a relatively new travel blogging conference that takes place twice a year (the last one was in Porto. PORTO!!! I love that place. Can’t believe I missed THAT, but anyway..). I was really excited! It was to be my first conference. Of any kind. EVER. I booked myself a really nice place just across the conference venue, that I found on Airbnb.what I packed

^In my backpack: conference schedule, spare cardigan, iPhone charger (we all know just how shit the iPhone battery life is), Goliath the mouse, and Panda.

blogging at the airport

^I tried to get some ‘work’ done while waiting at Heathrow Airport. Was editing some more pics from Iceland <– this just NEVER ends.

view from the plane

^It was BEAUTIFUL in London as I left it. Clear blue skies.

^A Vine video that I made whilst on the plane. Click to play.
(Follow me on Vine! the name is SMALLCRAZY).

rotterdam airport rotterdam airport baggage carousel

And then.. I arrived in Rotterdam. GREY AND RAINY.

Some holiday…”

But look at their luggage reclaim area! I found it so amusingly cute. It was so woody that it even smelt it.

A bus from Rotterdam Airport to Centraal cost me €3 (and the ticket is valid on public transport for one hour). By the time I arrived at the apartment late that night, I was looking rather like a wet and tired rat. My host, Jan, was super.. and so was my little top floor studio.

painting my nails

^Planted myself on the bed and began painting my nails in between blogging.. totally havin a party.

my room in rotterdam

It was so much fun unpacking and placing all my stuff around the room the next day!

I missed the morning opening remarks and keynote talks at the conference. I was just SO TIRED.

TBU ROTTERDAM & THE MAINPORT HOTEL

TBU Rotterdam took place at The Mainport Hotel, a brand new (literally it opened ONE DAY before the conference began) five-star design hotel located in Leuvehaven, near the water. A lot of the attendees stayed there out of convenience.. but sadly it was out of my price range.

I WISHED I could’ve stayed there though, because it looked super cool and I heard that some rooms contained your own little jacuzzi and SAUNA.

mainport hotel lobby mainport compass ceiling

^Awesome chandelier lights hanging off what seems to be a giant upside-down compass. Without arrows.

mainport reception desk

^The long white reception desk looked like something out of a sci-fi movie.

^I hung out here a lot.. mostly to use the free wifi. And to pretend that I was really busy.

When in fact, I was doing this… >>

rainy rotterdam

Just capturing the mood!

ANYWAY

All delegates/attendees were greeted with a goodie bag including lots of information about Rotterdam and a three-day public transport card. I was (just a little) embarrassed to have turned up so late.. but I really didn’t wanna be shuffling around like a zombie all day. I had to turn up looking GOOD.

So eventually, I made it to the main room for the ‘Creating Content for Travellers’ presentation by Gary Bembridge and subsequent panel discussion. I was particularly excited about the panel discussion as one of the speakers on it was Gemma of Retrochick. True to form, she turned up with the most amazing vintage style hairdo and she was great when she spoke.

me at tbu rotterdam

^This photo was taken by Anja of The Curly Traveller, who was attracted to me because of all the colours and toys and stickers I had with me. Anja turned out to be a kindred spirit and a gem – you’ll see why in a later post.

My jumper is from Topshop.

pony at tbu alien at tbu

I took the above pics during the couple of short breaks in between. My toys are balanced on my pink business-card holder…. my rather LAME card holder I should say, cos it barely holds ten cards at once.

clare at tbu cold starter

^I sat next to Clare of Need Another Holiday, and we had lunch together too – this was provided downstairs. The drink on the right is actually a cold soup starter.. can’t remember what it was called but it was something with tomato.

Clare was super sweet and lovely and funny.. She lives up north and hopefully I’ll see her again too. She writes about how to make the most out of travel while keeping a full time job.

lunch at mainport hotel

^I have to admit that the food served at the hotel was not exactly mouth-watering. But y’know what it was there and available.. so I simply reminded myself that at least I didn’t have to walk out in the rain to find my own lunch!

HOTEL BAZAR, ROTOWN, & NRC ROTTERDAM

hotel bazar rotterdam

Clare and I went to a huge middle eastern restaurant (part of a hotel) on Witte de Withstraat (one of the main streets in Rotterdam where all the bars and restaurants are) called Bazar, following recommendations from other people who had been.

The place was huge and full of LIGHTS! I was completely enticed.

wine at bazar

We shared a bottle of wine.

food at hotel bazar

Ordered a couple of main dishes to share, too. The food was amazing! I loved it all. Everything was tasty and juicy and satisfying.

The TBU Networking Event for the first night was at a bar/live music venue called Rotown.

goliath at rotown

^Goliath came along too, but he found it a little boring since he couldn’t drink.

I managed to stop by a coffee-shop on the way. Got some goodies and proceeded to befriend the naughty people of the conference who would indulge with me. Sometimes I think this is the best way to make friends.. (as I’ve said before.. this is an honest blog!)

witte de withstraat

^Buzzing Witte de Withstraat on a Friday night.

Upon leaving Rotown, Clare and I stumbled upon an EVEN COOLER scene at a place called NRC.

nrc rotterdam nrc rotterdam 2

The music was fab, the ceilings were HIGH and they had a giant disco ball! And cherry blossoms inside.

We spotted a group of Dutch girls wearing bodycon dresses and all made up.. but on their feet, all were wearing sneakers or Converse shoes. Super awesome! I love girls who dress to DANCE.

I had a fantastic first day both in terms of the conference and Rotterdam city. While it provided lots of useful content and an opportunity to learn lots of new things, I thought the best part was all the amazing travel-minded people I got to meet and play with. And Rotterdam was pretty cool.. I loved seeing all the tall buildings and modern architecture – being in Europe, this was rare.

More later! X

*For more info, check out my first post on Snowboxx Festival
On the Saturday morning (the morning of our first full day), we loaded up on the hotel breakfast and hurried to the resort. We were overwhelmingly excited and couldn’t wait to get on the snow.As it was my first time snowboarding (I am a skier) and Reena hadn’t been in years, we booked daily lessons for five days. They were three hours per session and had a VERY KIND starting time of 12pm.

Arinsal Ski Resort, Andorra

The town of Arinsal is connected to Arinsal Ski Resort via two services – a gondola and a chairlift that connects to one of the hotels (I think it’s Hotel Crest).

The easiest one for us was the gondola, which was a mere 3-5 minute walk from our hotel – although the return trip isn’t that easy since it’s uphill and we’re either tired from snowboarding or drunk from partying..

^View from the bridge to the gondola

Our Snowboxx ticket included a 5-day lift pass., so we didn’t have to bother purchasing one separately.

^Gondola scenery

We had to collect our hire equipment first (one day I will have MY OWN) and because eeeeeveryone else from the festival had the same idea, we were stuck in a massive queue. We were late by about half an hour for our first lesson – like bad students.

Yep, the queue was so long that Reena planted herself on the tiles..

I compare the waiting experience to receiving a Christmas present early, but then having to WAIT till actual Christmas day to open it. However when the day finally comes, it’s freaking awesome!

19-IMG_8694.jpg
^Our classmates and instructor on the baby/learning slope.

Our instructor was an Argentinian guy called Augusto. He was cool! He snowboards, skis, surfs, dives, and.. who knows what else. He alternates between being in Europe and South America / snowsports and beach sports. What a life!

He was really patient, and funny too.

On the first day we had to use this totally beginnerish ‘lift’ called the Magic Carpet. It’s like a walkalator with a very slight incline. It goes very slowly and gently, and takes you to the top of the learning slope, haha.

After a couple of rounds on the Magic Carpet, Augusto let us go up our first chairlift – a 4-person one.

One of the things I really love about skiing/snowboarding is the attire. Everything’s so bright and colourful. And for once, I don’t stand out like some crazy neon person. In fact, I felt rather.. DULL on the slopes during the days when I wore my boring ol’ white/pink ski jacket and GREY pants. How odd, as usually I’m one of the most colourful people in a crowd 🙂

^Reena, wearing my Billabong Boys’ size 12 jacket.. 🙂

Speaking of kids, we were rather impressed by all the tiny tots zipping around on their skis (snowboarding is not recommended for very young children).. they looked so cute and cool at the same time.

^OK This girl isn’t that young.. but I just didn’t manage to get a picture of the really SMALL ones.

There was even a girl of about five or six who was teaching her mom to ski. I overheard her giving her mom tips while helping lead her to the charlift queue 🙂

^View from one of the larger chairlifts, which we took on the second day.

Surf Restaurant/Bar/Club

I had to insert a section about Surf Restaurant because it was where I consumed the largest burger I’ve ever had in my life.

A 300g patty. IT WAS SO GOOD! Look, it’s nearly the size of Reena’s head.

My friends and I are obsessed with these ‘paradise’ glasses at the moment..

^Goliath, my pet mouse, joined in the fun too.

Surf is reputed for its steaks and apparently has the ‘best steak in Arinsal’, although some beg to differ. I didn’t try it in the end, so I can’t really say, but looking at the grill on the way out made me wish I DID try it.

Retro Ski Day

Sunday was Retro Ski Day (in association with DOS Clothing)!
As you can imagine, I was really excited. I could finally wear that 80s ski jacket that I found at Brick Lane a couple of months prior.

^Zorro in a matching bright pink North Face jacket.

Despite my very AWESOME jacket, I wasn’t nearly as retro as many of the other festival-goers on the slope. There were groups of people in matching retro-gear, animal costumes, cowboys,.. in fact all sorts of random crazy costumes. It was so much fun just to watch!

^These penguins were in Zorro’s skiing class. We bumped into each other at a cafe somewhere up on the mountain.

^With Joe, a classmate.
Joe’s wearing an amazing women’s yellow zebra-print ski onesie. Haha 🙂

^With my beloved Reena.

After a productive day of learning to turn/connect turns, everyone headed back to Arinsal town for nighttime festivities, i.e. food, music, drinks.

^We kept our jackets and switched to leggings.

Aren’t these hotel lobby pics simply glam?

^Fancy dress peeps.. and a suspicious-looking blow-up doll..

When I saw this lot pass by I couldn’t help myself from stopping them in the middle of the street for a photo.

This was unfortunately one of the LAST pics on my phone for the night.. which ended up being kind of a blur..

Monday – Main Event at Panoramix

So Reena and I missed our snowboarding lesson the next day…
I’d never felt so DEAD when waking up before. I’m lucky enough not to experience any headaches or hangovers (ever) but boy did I feel like I was dying that morning.
We did surprise ourselves by dragging our sorry bodies down to breakfast, but once we ate what little food we could manage, it was back to bed where we stayed for HOURS. Anyone who saw us would’ve thought we were a couple of corpses.

Nevertheless, we still got up eventually and managed a couple of hours practising on the slopes by ourselves (sans our instructor, Augusto).

Reena’s wearing my blue Billabong jacket (as in pic earlier) because she LOST hers the night before. But to her credit, she did find it in the end.

Monday was special because the gondola was going to be running special services through the evening and night to take people to/from the Snowboxx main event, which was being held at the outdoor Bar Panoramix stage at Arinsal Ski Resort. There was going to be a party on the slopes!

We stayed in our ski attire because we didn’t have enough time between dinner to get changed. This turned out to be good because it snowed non-stop that night.

The lineup from the night included Roses Gabor, Pedestrian, and The Other Tribe. The music was a mix of dubstep, electronic, garage, maybe some dance. Admittedly, I really am not a fan of dubstep.. but the combination of an amazing party location and a young, fun crowd made the night AWESOME.

^Zorro, me, Reena

It was pretty much blizzard-ing all through the night.

Imagine – dancing on a mountain with lights and music plus fast, angry snowflakes rushing at your face. It was crazy fun!

The finale had the team of snowboard/ski instructors coming down the slope with torches of fire. Our instructor, Augusto, was somewhere in there!

^Here is a compilation of some rubbish clips I managed to get that night.. You can spot me dancing like a moron at the start.

^This poor guy lost a bet with his friends and his punishment was to wear a PLASTIC BAG over his head during the whole party.

^Another poor dude who probably lost another bet and is paying the price by having to do push-ups on the snow. LOL!

This is the second instalment of my second trip to Porto (March 2013), and a continuation to this post, which told the story of the Saturday morning after an all-nighter on Friday. The Ribeira district/riverfront (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is one of my favourite parts of Porto, not only because it’s simply picturesque but because I have such fond memories of goofing about with my friends by the Douro River on our first trip, during which we also stayed at an apartment in Ribeira itself. In this area you can see ancient houses, cafes, restaurants, shops, and some cool (or perhaps dodgy-looking) laneways.. and on the river you’ll find colourful traditional boats and cruise boats floating around, as if placed there just to be in your photographs.

^Ponte Dom Luís I (Dom Luís I Bridge) – my favourite of the six main bridges in Porto.

On the left side is Porto and on the right is Vila Nova De Gaia (or just Gaia), where you’ll find the ever-so-popular port wine houses.

Combined with those that I took last October, I must have a bazillion of photos of the SAME PLACE stored on my laptop..

More Goofing Around

The temperature that day was about 12-14 but with the sunshine, it was warm enough for us to lay down on the concrete and stare into the sky for a while.

If you’ve been to Portugal, you’ll identify that one of their staple dishes is salt cod – known locally as ‘bacalhau’.

Adega São Nicolau is a family run restaurant set up in one of the lanes of the Ribeira that serves traditional Portuguese food.. we went there in October and decided we would go again this time!

Izan is absolutely in love with the Bacalhau à Lagareiro, which is salt cod with onions, potatoes, peppers, and lots of olive oil. Understandably, because it’s freaking delicious.

Dinner & Saturday Night

IMG_7986.jpg IMG_7987.jpg
^This was us for a good few hours after returning from Ribeira.

We were so knackered from lack of sleep the night before (up till 6am). We just laid around the apartment surrounded by food and music. Kind of like pigs, really.

We had a late dinner at Adega do Carregal, which was a recommendation by our awesome Airbnb host, Tomás. It was literally around the corner from our apartment, in the downtown/historic centre of Porto.

This must be a place frequented by locals as I could barely find any info on it on Google and we were probably the only non-Portuguese people in the restaurant. The prices were low and the food was really good!

IMG_1203.jpg
^The girls with sweet Paulo, a new friend we made on this trip.

He had hung out with us at our apartment as we lazed around and caught up on some rest before dinner.

^My little uva and I

IMG_7995.jpg

IMG_7996.jpg
^Upon Paulo’s suggestion, Flo and I ordered Frango de Cabidela / Arroz the Cabidela (frango = chicken / arroz = rice).

Arroz de Cabidela is a Portuguese dish made with poultry or rabbit, along with its blood. This is what gives the sauce a greyish/brown hue. It had a bit of a sour taste to it but I LOVED IT.

It was EVEN BETTER after I ordered a side of fried egg (with runny yellow) to have with it – to Paulo’s disgust and disapproval.. 😉

After filling our tummies, it was time to PARTY! We love partying at the Baixa (downtown), which was a mere five-minute walk from the restaurant.

I don’t have many pics from the night.. but here’s what I could find:

IMG_8011.jpg
^Reena in our overused ‘paradise glasses’. I don’t remember what this bar was called.. there are too many in the area!

IMG_7999.jpg
^This I do know was from Plano B, one of the bigger and better known bars/clubs.

It has an art-gallery feel and really high ceilings. I was mesmerised by the colourful lights and giant mirrorball in the upstairs area. There’s also a downstairs where they have DJs and live bands.

IMG_8014.jpg
^Reena, Me, & Luis

Luis is a friend we made on our first trip in October, as a result of wandering around aimlessly on a Monday night. We had gone to ask for recommendations from the nearest bar, where he happened to be working. He gave us some really good ideas and we ended up partying with him and his friends.

So of course.. we did it again! This time he took us (Reena & I) away from the Baixa to a club called Pitch.

IMG_8016.jpg
I don’t remember how it began, but my nickname for him is Frog. Or Sapo (frog in Portuguese).

It was a large part thanks to him that our trip was so awesome (heaps of fun) even though we missed The Color Run. So THANKS LUIS!

Here is a video – the start is us being idiots at our apartment, and then standing outside Pitch.. also being idiots.

Reena came up with ‘O fuckin’ Lá’ – her version of ‘Olá (‘hello’ in Portuguese) and we were TOO AMUSED by it. Luckily, most people who heard it from us felt the same 😉

In March this year I attended my very first ski festival, Snowboxx! Snowboxx is like a very much smaller (and more affordable) version of Snowbombing.. and it’s also new. Held in the resort of Arinsal in Andorra, 2013 marked its inaugural year.Reena and I booked our package through their website AGES ago in December (to me, planning three months ahead is super early). The great thing about the Snowboxx booking system is that you could book your place by simply paying a deposit of £50 (peanuts).

Depending on which hotel you selected, you could get six nights’ accommodation, five-day lift pass, plus the festival wristband for £199pp. Ours was about £250pp. You only pay the balance sometime at the end of January, and then you still have until March to pay for optional extras, such as transfers, ski/snowboard school, equipment hire, or extra nights at the hotel.

After adding on snowboard hire, lessons, transfers, we had spent about £475pp. I thought it was superb value for ONE WEEK of fun and music on the slopes! In comparison, attending Snowbombing would’ve cost me double for the SAME things.

IMG_8473.jpg

We booked a very-early-morning flight via Easyjet to Toulouse, France on the Friday (return ticket = £110).

In my excitement – and lack of organisation – I didn’t sleep at all the night before. We were at Blackfriars station waiting for our train by 4am! Can I just say that Blackfriars is an absolute shit station. It’s got NOTHING and it’s freezing cold..

We were walking around the whole place looking for somewhere to shelter from the chilly air and ended up in some sort of construction-materials room.. so we hid there for 15 minutes. A totally unglam start to our holiday.. haha

IMG_8474.jpg

But once we touched down in Toulouse, all memory of crappy ol’ Blackfriars station were burnt away.. by the brilliant sunshine that greeted us as soon as we stepped out of the plane!

GOPR0002.jpg

We had a bit of time to kill before our coach transfer to Andorra so I took out my GoPro to test it out.
It’s my new toy 🙂

IMG_8479.jpg

^Me and my pink Timberlands.. still can’t believe I survived the whole festival in that ONE pair of shoes.. -_-

IMG_8480.jpg

In between packing the night before, I did at least manage to add some fresh dye to my washed-out hair.

IMG_8484.jpg

It was when we were queuing for the bus that we made an observation. Tactlessly, I said to Reena, rather loudly, “Wow there are a lot of [male body part]s here!”.

I was just on the last word when someone cut me off, affirming my thoughts with, “Yeah it is a sausage fest isn’t it”.

Haha! So yes.. there were a lot of boys attending the festival (not a bad thing).. and barely any girls!

IMG_8489.jpg

Enjoying our duty-free goodies on the bus.

Driving From Toulouse to Andorra

I created a separate section for this because the drive to Andorra was really beautiful! I was dead sleepy but because there was so much to see out the window, I forced myself to stay awake to enjoy all the things we were passing by,

Here are some through-the-glass snapshots from the drive, taken mostly with my iPhone 5:

IMG_8499.jpg IMG_8508.jpg IMG_8509.jpg IMG_8516.jpg IMG_8521.jpg IMG_8527.jpg IMG_8526.jpg IMG_8532.jpg IMG_8539.jpg IMG_8547.jpg

I think I let out a little squeal when we started ascending and seeing patches of white snow.

IMG_8558.jpg

^And then those small patches became.. big plains of snow.

P3222409.jpg

Our bus driver was considerate enough to stop a couple of times for us to take toilet breaks along the way. But on this occasion, it was a boys-only toilet stop. There were, after all, only five girls including Reena and I on our bus.

P3222417.jpg

^Goofing around (as usual). It was SO GOOD to smell the fresh air!

P3222418.jpg P3222424.jpg P3222429.jpg

It was super bright and sunny.. the perfect welcome.

First Night in Arinsal

The bus dropped us right outside our hotel (Husa Xalet Verdu), which I found to be nicer than I expected. It was on a small hill and it was cute.

Was so knackered from the long journey from London and so we crashed on the bed for a couple of hours before heading down to Cisco’s (a popular restaurant/bar/club in Arinsal) to grab dinner.

IMG_8565.jpg

^The place was packed with other festival-goers – mostly boys as you can see..

IMG_8568.jpg

^I had a tex mex steak. Ok I know its shape is dodgy but it tasted excellent!

IMG_8570.jpg

^Cicso’s spare ribs.

The Snowboxx team had sent us full details on where to go to collect our wristbands, along with information on checking into hotels, where to get your ski/snowboard equipment, list of discounts available (for food/drink), etc.

They had booths set up in the upstairs of another bar, El Cau, only two minutes down the road – one if you run.

Admittedly, upon arrival at the hall, we felt like we were back at uni again, registering for something at O-Week or something (in Australia, where I went to uni, O-Week is Orientation Week).

Everyone was so.. YOUNG. And everyone WAS still probably attending uni.. Not that I’m complaining! It was kinda cool. Especially since no one could guess that we were way past uni. Reena and I declared ourselves 21 for the sake of the festival ;p

There was a pretty good live band there that night.. and I nearly screamed with joy – actually I did – when they played one of my FAVOURITE songs: Where is My Mind by The Pixies

I managed to record a short clip.. which I’ve just watched myself now and oh I really do love that song.

That alone made my night FAB.

IMG_8584.jpg

We bar-hopped for a bit, and then stopped by this little creperia outside the main gondola entrance. This creperia proved to be very popular with everyone during the course of the week.

Reena and I went to bed that night like fidgety children – we couldn’t WAIT for our first day on the slopes! I was excited because it was to be my first time snowboarding (I normally ski).

Next post up soon.
